South Leinster Junior Hurling B championship

Grennan College (Thomastown)......6-7     Wexford CBS................0-20

Scoring twenty points and still managing to lose is a rare feat but one that befell the Wexford CBS juniors recently when they travelled to Thomastown in this South Leinster B championship clash.
The defence leaked a total of six goals which scuppered any hope of victory and most were the result of sloppy mistakes. The commitment and desire of the home side could not be matched and CBS were forced to accept defeat when a win was well within their grasp.
Darragh Rossiter opened the scoring with a fine point and then Stephen Kearney passed to Liam Rockett who scored the first of his four points from play.
The next score was the first goal for Thomastown as a mix up in the full-back line was punished. Back came the CBS at the other end when Stephen Rossiter put Stephen Kearney through and he levelled. Liam Rockett fed Danny Walsh who split the posts from a tight angle and CBS went in front.
However, the forwards were over elaborating a lot on the ball and wasting chances while the defence and midfield were under pressure from their direct opponents. The team was re-jigged but by the 20th minute it was 3-2 to 0-7 and by half-time it was 4-5 to 0-12 as Stephen Kearney’s frees were keeping CBS in the game.
CBS dominated the second half and mostly through Stephen Kearney’s free and Liam Rockett’s points, the Wexford lads got themselves back into the game. It was 4-7 to 0-18 with five minutes to go and the Thomastown were lads were beginning to wilt but their goalkeeper made two amazing saves.
At the other end, more defensive lapses resulted in two quick goals which killed off any chances of a result.
Next up is Enniscorthy CBS at home and a victory will send CBS through as group runners-up.
