The Bokerboys, sponsored by Renewables Academy, went to Carlow IT today to play Pres. Bray in the first round of the Vinny Murray Cup today and returned victorious. It was a day when 'The Coleman Delivered'.
Perceived to be the underdogs, Wexford had to survive an early onslaught, as Pres came at them from the start, hard running gaining meters and flashing the ball wide at every opportunity. Wexford were called for offside, but the resulting kick was missed.
Wexford playing into the wind and facing the low sun, then had their chances, Ian Moran was unlucky to be called back for an adjudged knock on, but from a line out Wexford set the maul and Joe Coleman delivered his first of the day. Sean Stafford converted. 7-0 Wexford. Pres . responded when they breached the Wexford line out wide, conversion missed. 7-5 Wexford.
Wexford were again penalised for offside and this time the scoreboard moved up three points. Trailing now Wexford but together there best phases and just before half time were unlucky not to cross for another try. 8-7 down and now with the elements in their favour Wexford were optimistic.
Within a minute, The Bokerboys had another seven points in the bag. Captain Collie turned down a kick at the posts in favour of a lineout in the corner. Brave call, but The Coleman delivered again, when the maul splintered near the line, Big Joe continued on his way forward and got the touchdown, again Sean Stafford converted. 14-8 Wexford.
Six minutes later the Wexford defence had been breached again.A thrilling game was in progress, 14-13 Wexford.Sean Stafford and Eoin Roche were pinning back the opposition with cleverly executed kicks and once again from good lineout position, the maul set on it's merry way. Joe Coleman collected his hat-trick and the forwards were rewarded for there efforts. Sean Stafford continued his excellent kicking form and added the extra two points. 21-13.
While the scoreline didn't change again there were great exchanges from both sides. Tackling was immense, line breaks were rare. With time running out, Wexford had a two score lead which was reassuring and when Eoin Roche kicked the ball off the field to end play, a big upset had been recorded.
The team were superb, committed and clinical. An incredible bond exists within this squad, we look forward to the next round v St. Columbas next week.
