Wexford CBS won the South Leinster Juvenile
Football ‘C’ Championship last Thursday with a six point victory over Mountrath
CS. The Carlow Centre of Excellence in Fenagh was the venue for this replayed
final as the Boker Boys claimed their first piece of silverware at this level
since 2002.
Despite playing into a strong wind in the first half the CBS students played some great attacking football and were first to register a score through a well taken Cathal Kirwan point. Luke Dowdall won possession from the resulting kick out and soloed through the Mountrath defence to kick a fine point.
The Laois school could not contain Dowdall and the Volunteers man hit the back of the net with a great goal five minutes later. Mountrath CS responded to score two points but the Wexford side were soon raising the green flag again via Cian Foley.
He grabbed the goal of the game on fifteen minutes when he showed tremendous shill to curl the ball around the Mountrath keeper into the bottom right corner. The Mounrath number one was picking the ball out of the net moments later when Justin Butler was first to react to a Luke Dowdall shot off the crossbar with a neat finish.
The Wexford town school were now in the ascendancy and Foley added another point on twenty two minutes. Mountrath tried to utilise the strong wind and kicked high balls into the Wexford defence but heroic defending from Ben McMahon, Jamie Thomas and Gary Hall – Roche kept them at bay.
However in the last minute of the half Mountrath managed to break through the Wexford defence to score a goal to leave seven points between the sides at half time (Wexford CBS 3-3 Mounrath CS 1-2).
Wexford’s seven point lead was soon down to four points when Mountrath scored a goal in the first minute of the second half. CBS captain Jack O’Leary then demonstrated great leadership skills by kicking a point after sustained pressure by the Laois men in the opening minutes of the second half.
Mountrath searched in vain for further scores but could not breach the Wexford defence with Eoghan Reck in particular giving a commanding display in the full back line. The Laois men did pull another goal back through a somewhat fortuitous penalty in the 50th minute.
The Boker Boys showed great character to come back from this set back and a great team move down the field led to a crucial goal from Sarsfields man Cian Foley. Following this the CBS lads experienced a setback when what seemed like a perfectly good goal was harshly disallowed in the 55th minute. Cian Foley finished expertly after a Jordan Hayes shot rebounded off the post but the referee surprisingly ruled that Hayes’s shot had originally went wide. Nevertheless, the Wexford town men had the silverware in their sights and Hayes pointed from a narrow angle on the left before adding a pointed free in the dying minutes.

In what was a great team performance by
Wexford CBS, they had fine displays in defence by Ben McMahon, Jamie Thomas and
Eoghan Reck. Cathal Kirwan and Jack O’Leary both gave superb exhibitions of
midfield play while Cian Foley, Leon Nolan, Jordan Hayes and Luke Dowdall all
stared in the forward line.
