Salesian College (Limerick)......................1-9
The quest for a
first ever All-Ireland title fell just short in Leahy Park as the Munster
champions Pallaskenry earned their All-Ireland title after a titanic battle.
CBS enjoyed the
strong wind advantage in the opening half and quickly had points on the board
from Sean Stafford and one from a seemingly impossible angle from Stephen
Kearney.
However, Salesian
College were very dogged and physical and they stayed with CBS preventing them
to build up any kind of a lead. It was 0-5 to 0-3 approaching half-time when a
free dropped into the Wexford square and went all the way to the net. It was a
cruel blow which meant that Salesian had a one point lead at the break and the
wind to come (0-5 to 1-3).
However, CBS
redoubled their efforts and tore into their opponents. After 44 the score was
1-6 each. Sean Stafford scored a super goal from a half volley to breathe life
into his team.
The forward unit
couldn’t win enough possession and the defence was working overtime to contain
the Limerick students. A twelve minute scoreless spell followed as both sides
struggled for supremacy.
It was CBS who
cracked first and three quick Pallaskenry points followed in the closing stages
as they held out for the victory.
Best for CBS were
Daniel Lynch, Evan Dunbar, John Hamilton, Ciaran Kirwan, Jamie McDonnell, Conor
Fenlon and Sean Stafford.
It’s been a
remarkable journey since the campaign started in September. CBS have won the
South Leinster title and the Leinster champions and can be very proud of their
efforts. Well done to all the panel.
