Wexford CBS and Bridgetown VC played out an entertaining challenge match which the visitors to Pairc Charman won by five points.
CBS started very poorly and conceded two early goals despite playing with the wind. However, centre-forward Noel O’Brien grabbed two goals to level matters after ten minutes. The first goal was from a free which went all the way to the net and the second was a fine strike which the keeper couldn’t keep out such was the power of the shot.
The CBS attack has lots of possession but wasn’t converting due to players not getting in front of their men. As the half-wore on though, this changed and the points began to arrive.
Noel O’Brien set up Kristian Bunici and he split the posts and Kristian repeated the trick minutes later. At the other end, slack marking allowed Bridgetown in for two goals which was disappointing.
The half-time score was 4-3 to 2-4. The second half started brightly for CBS when Ben McMahon scored a fabulous goal but all the Boker boys could add to that was a point from Jordan Hayes while Bridgetown struck four points.
It was a useful exercise and the full panel will continue to train for the County under-14 League Blitz which will be held after Easter. This is a competition that CBS have won for the last three years in a row. The panel is also due another day in Thurles at the Westcourt Cup.

Under 14 Hurling - Rice Cup
The
under-14 hurlers of Wexford CBS made the lengthy trip to Tipp last Wednesday to
participate in the annual Rice Cup tournament for Christian Brother Schools.
The tournament is run on a blitz format (15 minutes per half) that includes 20
schools over four days in Dr. Morris Park in the shadow of Semple Stadium.
Round 1: Wexford CBS 2-4 North Monastery (Cork) 2-2
CBS trailed by 2-2 to 1-1 at the interval and just on half-time conceded as bizarre goal as will be seen anywhere. Full-back Kevin Corrigan shepparded a harmless ball over the endline and tapped it back to his goalkeeper Adam Howlin. The ball crossed the line as Howlin changed hurls for the puck-out and the referees amazingly insisted on the goal being recorded for the famous Cork school.
Jordan Hayes availed of a tidy pass from Kristian Bunici midway through the first half and lashed to the net and Cody Murphy added a point but North Mon had registered 1-2 and were leading by the smallest margin going into the break before their extraordinary second goal.
Undeterred, CBS showed tremendous spirit to turn the game around. Kevin Corrigan was moved from full-back to attack and the defence tightened up to keep their opponents scoreless.
Jordan Hayes and Corrigan grabbed points and Corrigan’s late goal following a super catch pushed the Wexford students back in front and CBS wrapped up the scoring in the final minute with a point after a flowing move involving Noel O’Brien and Cathal Kirwan before Jordan Hayes split the posts.

Kevin Corrigan started in attack and scored an excellent first half goal when he cut in along the endline and flashed the ball to the net. At the other end, the Tipp boys were racking up the points and keeping Adam Howlin very busy in the goal.
The second half followed a similar fashion. The CBS forwards found it difficult to get scores and the only point came from Cormac Byrne after a delivery from Philip Rawson. This was a tough and tight game but the Thurles students were too strong.

However, Kevin Corrigan dragged CBS back into the match with two points and Terry Whitty grabbed another after good work by Jack O’Leary.
It was 1-2 to 0-3 at the break and new half was just as tight. Cormac Byrne availed of a nice passing move between Jack O’Leary and Terry Whitty to lash the ball to the net but the Kilkenny students responded with a goal of their own.
Jack O’Leary and Terry Whitty added points for the Boker boys but Kilkenny had a cushion and ran out winners by three points.

Senior Rugby - Another Final

Another final appearance awaits our SCT as they have qualified to meet Newpark Comprehensive in The Vinny Murray Plate Final next Tuesday.
While we won it was far from perfect, but what was there in abundance was our absolute resolution not to surrender, play until you ' hear the fat lady sing' and all that. We started with full-back Liam Barry and scrum-half Conor Fenlon, both out through illness. Both Evan Dunbar and Thomas Barry stepped in for their first starts of the year and acquitted themselves very well. Some early possession in the opposing 22 failed to yield a try, but centre Sean Stafford made a snap decision and clinically executed a drop goal to open our account. 3-0. We didn't have the 'fire in the belly' and failed to press home our physical advantage which we were enjoying in the pack. Patience, patience, patience - Triple P. It will be back next week.
D.L.S. pressurised us late in the half and crossed the line for two tries. We looked tired but the feeling at half time was one of optimism as we had yet to ignite.
Territory was the name of the game and within five minutes of the restart Collie Joyce-Ahearne had crashed over to score. Sean Stafford converted. 10-10. Unfortunately we didn't manage to build on this and after 20 mins of the second half they scored again and went 15-10 up.
Time for impact changes and on came Ciaran Kavanagh and Joe Coleman. They gave us fresh impetus and with only two minutes left on the clock and a five metre scrum, we were in good position, just needed to execute the plan. Kav carried hard, quick ruck ball and Joe Coleman crashed over the ruck, try, thank you very much. Sean Stafford needed to kick the conversion for the victory, no better man. Flags raised, job done, phew, that was close.

South Leinster Juvenile Hurling B Championship - Round 3

Wexford CBS enjoyed another game of fast hurling against quality opposition in Pairc Charman on Thursday as they found FCJ Bunclody too hot to handle in match played in a constant rainfall.
FCJ Bunclody had a great start and had the first six points on the board despite fine defending from Kevin Corrigan and Shane Pierce. However the pressure was beginning to tell and the visiting full-forward found the net past Adam Howlin after 15 minutes.
However, the Bokerboys showed great spirit and responded when Lee Busher lashed the ball to the net and then Jack O’Leary grabbed two puck-outs in a row and dispatched them over the bar within sixty seconds of each other.
The half-time score was 2-6 to 1-2 which reflected the dominance of the Bunclody students. Jack O’Leary registered his third point and Terry Whitty grabbed a point before Cian Redmond sent a stinging shot to net in the 45th minute.
However FCJ were keeping themselves in front with a goal from a penalty and some points as they displayed their skills.
Cormac Byrne gave the CBS boys some hope when he sent a great shot to the back of the net and Cody Murphy pointed a free but it was not enough and FCJ ran out eight point winners.
The conditions were tough and the opposition very good and the Wexford CBS hurlers are continuing their improvement – benefitting from played games against better teams.

HISTORY ESSAY WINNER
Congratulations to Eoin McDonald (TY) who won an all expenses trip to Madrid. Eoin’s winning essay was titled ‘Irish Involvement in the Spanish civil War’. This competition was open to the whole country, and Eoin did remarkably well to win this competition. As part of the prize Eoin read his winning essay in Madrid. The judges were very impressed with the high standard of Eoin’s work and said he was a great ambassador for both his country and school. Well done Eoin

Juvenile Hurling - South Leinster B Round 2

After this eleven goal thriller, the juvenile hurlers of Wexford CBS had to return home empty handed. The boys put in a much improved performance following the disappointing defeat to Enniscorthy CBS earlier in the week.
Jordan Hayes put CBS ahead with a neat point in the 3rd minute but the Gorey lads took over then and tore into a 1-4 to 0-1 lead after 15 minutes as the CBS hurlers stood off their opponents and were making far too many errors.
Eventually CBS settled and Jordan Hayes put Cathal Kirwan in for the first goal after 19 minutes and shortly after this Jack O’Leary lashed the ball to the net which got the Boker boys back into the game.
Gorey kept their noses in front with their second goal but Cathal Kirwan and Philip Rawson hit back with points and CBS suffered a setback when Gorey CS struck for their third goal just on the stroke of half-time (3-6 to 2-3).
Terry Whitty opened the scoring with a nice point but Gorey countered with two points of their own followed by their fourth and fifth goals the pressure began to tell.
The CBS lads refused to throw in the towel and came back with goals of their own. Cormac Byrne’s delivery was finished to the net by Chris Cowman and Jack O’Leary grabbed his second goal to cut the gap.
Jordan Hayes nipped in for his second point before Kristian Bunici pulled the ball to the net following a scramble. Gorey responded with a goal and the final score fell to Ben McMahon who went on a mazy solo run and flicked the ball over the bar.
Best on the day were Kevin Corrigan, Nicky Kelly, Shane Pierce, Cormac Byrne and Jack O’Leary. Next up is FCJ Bunclody in round 3.

Under 15 Soccer - League Semi-Final
CBS were
knocked out of the Schools League at the semi-final stage, they can count
themselves unlucky to be, a perfectly converted goal by Eoin Doyle was
dubiously called for offside and disallowed, preventing Wexford forcing
extra-time. Eoin had scored Wexford’s opening goal also.

David Leaps To UK Title
Congratulations to first year David McDonald who won the boys' Under 15 long jump title at the All-England Athletics Indoor championships in the National Indoor Arena in Bermingham on Sunday last. David broke his PB with a jump of 6.16m.

Juvenile Hurling

This game was played in Baltic conditions in Power Park and a late goal from Jordan Hayes clinched victory for CBS after a very entertaining game.
The home side struck for an early goal following indecision in the CBS defence. However CBS gradually got on top but found it very difficult to get scores. Cody Murphy converted a free in the 9th minute and moments later Jack O’Leary did great work to make room for Cormac Byrne to split the posts.
It got much better for CBS when Jack O’Leary pulled on the ball and his powerful shot found the net which levelled the game at 1-2 each. CBS had plenty of chances for scores but failed to take them.
That was the score at half-time when both sides made changes to their teams.
The cold conditions got to the players as the scores dried up. St. Peter’s surged ahead with two points to lead by 1-4 to 1-2 entering the closing stages of the match but Jordan Hayes pounced on the ball following a scramble in the goalmouth to clinch victory.
CBS face Enniscorthy CBS in the first round of the South Leinster Juvenile B championship next Wednesday.

South Leinster Senior Football ‘C’Final

A dominant wind assisted first half by Kildare school Ard Scoil Rathangan was enough to see off any hopes of Wexford CBS claiming the South Leinster Senior Football ‘C’ title at Eire Og, Carlow last Friday.
The Wexford lads were trailing by 1-9 to 0-3 at the break and found it difficult to handle the bigger and better Kildare students. They racked up the points rather too easily and had the CBS defence in bother with a sharp attacking unit led by Stefan Lawlor.
The CBS forwards found it very hard to get possession and all they had to show for the first half were three points by Joe Coleman, Sean Stafford and Jamie McDonnell.
Any hopes that the wind would lead to a change in fortunes for the Boker boys were quickly dashed as Rathangan cleverly kept control of the game. CBS tried their best to get back into the match but their efforts were well contained by the Kildare defence.
Sean Stafford notched a second point and Eoin Roche got the fifth point for Wexford CBS but they needed goals to cut the deficit and chances were few and far between.
Corner-back Jason Kearns is the only team member sitting the Leaving Certificate in June so this team will be largely intact next year and if they increase their efforts a South Leinster title is within their grasp.
Best on the day for the CBS - coached by Wexford senior footballer Cillian Kehoe and Peter Kirwan - were Evan Dunbar, Jamie McDonnell and Sean Stafford.

Juvenile Hurling - Challenge Match

In their first match of the season, the juvenile hurlers took on the St. Peter’s College ‘B’ team in a highly competitive challenge game played in poor conditions.
Despite the sticky pitch and the light rain, both sets of players gave 100% commitment which was very encouraging.
Cody Murphy opened the scoring with a nice point before the home side equalised. However CBS struck for the lead point from Kevin Corrigan’s converted ’65.
Jordan Hayes cut in from his corner in the 17th minute and found the net with a stinging shot which gave the Boker boys a commanding lead considering the conditions.
St. Peter’s struck back with a goal of their own and they were keeping CBS goal minder Adam Howlin very busy.
Kevin Corrigan and Jordan registered a point each before the half-time whistle to leave CBS ahead by 1-4 to 1-2.
Wexford CBS Jack O’Leary grabbed two second half points compared to a sole St. Peter’s point as scores were very hard to achieve in the wet and miserable conditions.
Best for CBS were Cormac Byrne, Nicky Kelly, Shane Pierce, Kevin Corrigan, Cathal Kirwan and Jordan Hayes.

The Bokerboys took their first ever Section 'B' scalp today when they defeated Templeogue College in Park Lane, Wexford today on a 20-17 scoreline. Two tries from Collie Joyce-Ahearne, two conversions and two penalties from Sean Stafford. A truly memorable victory. Outstanding performances from Conor Fenlon, James Roche, James Byrne and Steve Roche. Well done lads, super season goes on.
De La Salle, Churchtown in the semi-final next.

School Talent Search - South Leinster Final
There was no shortage of tough competition last
night at the South Leinster Final of the "All Ireland Schools Talent
Search". Thirty acts representing schools from all over the south east
battled it out in aid of the Cheerios Childline Appeal. Among the talented
competitors were three well renowned acts from Wexford C.B.S., each of whom
gave outstanding performances!
Marty Mullally impressed the crowd with a song of his own creation - "'Til the Clocks Run Out". L.M.J. (Luke Jackson, Marty Mullally and Jack Robinson) stunned the audience to an awestruck silence with their own unique rendition of "Titanium" and The Krew (Danny Fitzpatrick, Nathan Donovan and Chris Murphy Kehoe) ended the show on a high note with their harmonious performance of Coldplay's "Fix You".
Fourteen acts on the night progressed to the next round with the top three winning cash prizes also. Both The Krew and Marty Mullally now move on to compete in the All Ireland Semi Final of the competition having ranked in the top fourteen. Congratulations to both acts, especially Marty who came in 3rd place and received a cash prize of €250 for his efforts. Commiserations to LMJ who, despite being plagued with illness over the past week, gave a fantastic performance on the night. Unfortunately they will not progress any further.
The pen-ultimate round, the All Ireland Semi Final, will take place on the 23/24 February.
