Cycle Against Suicide

Well done to all the students and teachers who cycled on Friday last in appalling weather conditions to raise awareness about suicide in Ireland. They joined the cycle in Clonmel and set out for Portlaoise at 10.30am in cold , wet and windy conditions. After a brief stop in Cashel for some food and water , they set off again into the worsening elements for Thurles. The 45k was slow moving and students and adults alike were struggling with the severe weather.
Arriving in Thurles to a huge welcome, much needed shelter and warmth, as well as hot food was available. It didn't take long before rumours spread that the remainder of the days cycle was to be cancelled. What a relief all round. But still a great event and one that serves a great purpose.

South Leinster Athletics

Well to done our athletes who participated in the Spoth Leinster Schools Athletic Championships in Kilkenny on Wednesday last. Some excellent results were achieved.

Senior Boys 400 meters: Shaun Donoghue (2^nd  ) & broke 400 meter record.

Intermediate Boys 4 X 100 meter relay: 1^st (Sam O Neill,  Luke O Neill, Aaron Smyth & David McDonald.

All Ireland X Cel Enterprise Awards

Congratulations to Ryan Kavanagh who represented the County Wexford in the All Ireland Final of the Enterprise Awards in the Croke Park on Wednesday last. Over 17,000 students competed in this programme from the outset, while Ryan did not win in, it was a remarkable achievement reaching the finals.

Cycle Against Suicide 2015

A group of students and teachers will participate in this years Cycle Against Suicide on May 8th. We will tackle the Clonmel to Portlaoise 100k route.
Well done to all who were on the training spin on Friday last as we  build up kilometers for the event.
Please make sure your entery form is handed in along with your consent form. Also make sure your bike has had a service recently.

Congratulations to Mikey Lawlor and Ciaran Kirwan who represented Wexford at the weekend, defeating Westmeath in the Leinster Minor Championship.
Best of luck to Ciaran who lines out for the Minor Hurling team next week against Kilkenny.

Lourdes Trip 2015

Four students have been selected for the Lourdes Trip 2015. This trip takes place in May and students will be travelling with a group from the Diocese Of Ferns in order to help.

A huge thank you to all those who applied, all applicants were of a very high standard and we are proud to have such strong candidates among our 5^th Year group.

The four successful 5^th Year candidates are James Freeman, Adam Barnes, Eoin O’Shea and Kevin Birney.

China Trip 2015

A group of 29 students and 3 teachers have just returned after spending ten days in China. The trip has become an annual event, this being the fifth year a group from the school has travelled. It offers an amazing opportunity to experience Chinese Culture first hand. Pupils got to visit, The Great Wall, The Forbidden City, The Summer Palace, The Temple Of Heaven, Beijng Museum,The Olympic Park, Tea Ceremony, Acrobatic Show, Kung Fu session, overnight train journey to Xian, Terracotta Warriors,The Wild Goose Pagoda and  experienced shopping and haggling at The Pearl Market, Silk Market and Muslim Market. A truly wonderful experience.

X Cel County Enterprise Finals

Congratulations to our winners in the Enterprise County Finals. It was a great showcase for all the young enterprising ideas in the Wexford schools. A great achievement.

Spelling Test Champion

Congratulations to Cormac Sinnott who was victorious in the First Year spelling competition yesterday. In a tense final he was the last man standing after nine rounds of a tricky spelling fest.
Well done to all the other competitors who also excelled in this challenge.

U-15 Soccer Leinster Quarter Final

Wexford C.B.S  1-2 De Le Salle Dundalk

CBS U-15 soccer squad were eliminated on Thursday 5^th from the Leinster U-15 Schools tournament at the quarter final stage, losing 2-1 to De Le Salle Dundalk.

Wexford had taken a 1-0 lead early in the second half through Kallum Broaders. Each side has periods of dominance in the game but when Wexford lost goalkeeper Luke Moloney to injury after he bravely blocked a De Le Salle scoring opportunity, it proved to be a turning point for the Dundalk side. They piled forward in search of an equaliser. Their equaliser arrived after a corner from the left led to a scramble in the six yard-box, the ball was eventually bundled into Wexford’s net. 1-1.

A free-kick just ten minutes later produced their winner. Wexford’s replacement goalkeeper Dylan French’s attempted save was unsuccessful as the ball bounced into the CBS net. 1-2. The CBS boys did have chances to equalise but Leon Nolan twice and Shane Bergin both failed to find Dundalk’s net as CBS were unlucky not to at least force extra-time. So the U-15’s season came to an end after an impressive year in which the boys captured the Wicklow-Wexford Title.

London Trip 2015

Our journey started at 3.15 am when the bus arrived at Bride Street Church and brought us to Dublin airport where we boarded the plane for London Stansted Airport. When we arrived at Stansted Airport we got onto our coach and our guide William took us on a tour around London City. We saw some of the famous landmarks in London; Big Ben, London Tower Bridge (there was a Mexico exhibition here with lots of interactive stations and free tacos!), Westminster abbey, Buckingham palace, Piccadilly Circus, Leister Square, and Trafalgar Square and of course the M&M shop. We arrived at the hotel and had an hour to unpack before our delicious buffet dinner.

On Day 2 we woke up early in the morning and went down stairs to receive our buffet breakfast. Today was a visit to the London Sea Life Aquarium. In the aquarium we saw many wonderful sea creatures from all over the world. This was followed by the Imperial War Museum which was excellent. Highlights included life size trenches, war tanks, cars, and missiles. Some of the more serious exhibitions like “a family at war” and “the holocaust” were very moving. After the War Museum we took the bus to the restaurant “Bella Italia” the food was divine. After dinner we went to the outstanding Lion King show in the Lyceum Theatre. It was an amazing show! The music, lights and puppetry was like nothing we’d seen before. The show ended at 10:00 pm and when we got back to the hotel we went to bed.

Day 3 brought us to Stamford Bridge home of Chelsea football club. We started in the museum of Chelsea football club viewing cups and other notable historical events of the club. We got a tour of Stamford Bridge where we saw the pitch, the press room and the two changing rooms. Next up was the National Science and History museums. In the Science museum we got to see how energy was made, space exploration and history of medicine. The National History museum had the massive bone structures off the Tyrannosaurus rex and the Blue Whale (which was found washed up on the beaches of Wexford). We returned to the hotel for another lovely buffet dinner, we then had to pack our suitcases and bags to be ready for the departure on Saturday!

Our final day was a visit to the London Dungeons. The London Dungeons were very scary especially when Jack the Ripper jumped out of the shadows. After our visit to the London Dungeons we transferred to Westfield Shopping Complex. Westfield was absolutely massive and it had all the best shops in it. When we left Westfield our time in London came to an end. We departed Stansted Airport and took the return flight back to Dublin City. The tour was incredible and we all had an amazing time. J

Group 7 Game one: Wexford CBS..................10-4 Carlow CBS...............2-1
Wexford were slow to start and Carlow got the first goal. Eventually Wexford got into action and goals from Chris Cowman, Liam Hore and Rob Donnelly settled any nerves. The half-time score was 4-2 to 1-1.
The second half saw the Boker Boys continue their dominance with good passing and movement which the Carlow boys couldn’t match. Conor Coleman grabbed a pair of goals as did Liam Hore as CBS interchanged their subs wisely to spare legs for bigger battles ahead.

Group 7 Game two: Wexford CBS................7-6 Patrician (Newbridge).........1-4
Despite the final score this was a tough dogged battle with the Kildare students not giving up the fight until the game was over. It was a physical game with plenty of knocks taken and yellow cards for the Patrician lads.
The half-time score was 4-3 to 1-2 and would have been more if not for some sloppy play for CBS who struggled to handle the close attention of their opponents. It wasn’t until the second half that CBS clicked and began to spray the ball around and get the scores need to put serious daylight between the teams.
A captain’s part from Daniel Lynch helped get CBS through and secure two wins from two games which resulted in them finishing as Group 7 winners and earning a quarter-final spot versus St. Peter’s in Carlow Town Hurling Club.

Quarter-final: Wexford CBS.........................7-7 St. Peter’s College.................2-2
CBS dominated from start to finish in this quarter-final on the top pitch in Carlow Town Hurling Club. It was close enough in the beginning until CBS began to pull away as again Daniel Lynch showed his team the way along with excellent defending from Padraig Rossiter and efficient play from Stephen Rossiter.
It was 4-4 to 1-1 at the break and CBS had the wind to come in the second half. There was no danger of a slip up in the second half as Rob Donnelly and Liam Rockett found the net early on.

Semi-final: Wexford CBS......................0-2   Colaiste Mhuire (Johnstown).........2-4
The shame of this semi-final, on the main pitch, is that CBS left a place in the final behind them. Playing with the wind in the first half, CBS messed up four serious goal chances and instead of sitting on a comfortable half-time lead; were trailing by 1-1 to 0-2.
Conor Coleman’s free and Liam Rockett’s point were the CBS scores in that half. Liam Rockett was also denied a goal when his shot crossed the line but the referee thought otherwise.
CBS kept up the pressure in second half but missed easy chances while at the other end the Johnstown boys were clinical and snapped up any opportunity that came their way.
Discipline broke down as the frustration grew and Johnstown earned their place in the final.
It was a very enjoyable experience for the players who benefitted from coach Willie Carley’s excellent use of the sub interchange to ensure that everyone was as fresh as could be throughout the day.

German Exchange 2015

On February 5^th a group of 5 students from the CBS and 51 from the Loreto Secondary School travelled to Baden Württemberg in Southwest Germany. They were taking part in an exchange with St. Ursula’s Secondary School which is situated in Villingen- Schwenningen in the beautiful Black Forest region.

The students arrived to sub-zero temperatures and lots of snow. This was perfect weather for sledging down the Feldberg Mountain the next day.

After a weekend spent with the host families eating German food and hopefully speaking lots of German, the students rose early on Monday morning in order to be on time for the first class at 7.40 am. The first half of the day was spent meeting some of the students at St. Ursula’s and touring the Ursuline convent which gave rise to the school.

In the afternoon a trip to the local ice – rink meant more bumps and bruises and freezing hands and feet!

The remainder of the week flew past. The students were lucky to be in Villingen – Schwenningen during “ Fastnet” or “Fastnacht” . In this strongly Catholic region of Germany the tradition of Fastnet dates back to the Middle Ages and involves parties and parades with costumes handed down through the generations. Historically, Fastnet was viewed as the last chance to enjoy yourself before Lent began and the Germans, believe it or not, do know how to enjoy themselves!

We look forward to reciprocating the hospitality shown to us when the German students travel to Wexford in September.
