U.16 Hurlers Unbeaten

Congratulations to the U.16 hurlers who have advanced to the South Leinster Semi-Final against Carnew VS.

Gaelic Football Triumph

The First year football team had its first outing on Friday  2^nd of October. A huge amount of interest was shown among the group in representing the school and thus CBS comfortable fielded two team. Both teams travelled to Pairc Garman on a crisp autumn morning ready for action.

Team B had their first game against Enniscorthy Vocational  College. CBS started strong and took an early lead however a strong finish by Enniscorthy saw CBS fall to a one point defeat. Next up was a solid Good Counsel team.  A late CBS rally saw them  take the lead with time running out before a last grasp point by Good Counsel snatched a draw. In the third game CBS took on a physically bigger Meanscoil Charman team. CBS played a fine game with some great movement and score taking, however size told in the end as Meanscoil pulled away to win by 5 points. After a short break CBS played their final game against CBS Enniscorthy knowing that a win could qualify them for a final. CBS Wexford played the better football throughout the game but they found themselves losing at half time after conceding some soft scores. CBS Wexford stormed out in the second half and some early goals ensured victory. The win left Wexford waiting with a chance to qualify for the final, unfortunately other  results didn’t go the way they hoped and they  finished third in the group.

Team A played in the B’ division and after some early set back in group rallied to some nice victories. They found themselves also needing a win against CBS Enniscorthy to qualify for the final. CBS played the better football in the first half and held a slender lead at half-time. Despite some scares in the second half CBS Wexford held out to set up a final against Good Counsel  B’.  CBS again started well with some early attacks yielding scores from the foot of Óisin Waters. CBS controlled the midfield area for most of the first half with Eoin Kavanagh causing lots of trouble for Good Counsel, however some wasteful shooting and a late Good Counsel rally ensured that the scores remained close at half time.

 Good Counsel started the second half well with some nice points to even up the game. As the clock ticked away Good Counsel mounted attack after attack, some stellar defending by the Boker boys kept them at bay until a late shot found the back of the net. With the minutes ebbing away and the clock ticking into overtime the CBS lads found themselves 3 points down. A late flowing attack found Eoin Kavangh free on the Counsel 21 meter line from where he found the net to level the game. Extra time ensued Good Counsel seemed to find an extra gear in this 5minute period and had CBS under severe pressure. The Boker boys showed great heart and character putting bodies on the line with some stellar blocks. The referee blew the final whistle for the second time. The game had the unusual conclusion of being settled over a tense penalty shootout. After both teams missed penalties in the formal shootout the teams headed to sudden death. Both teams missed their first shots as the pressure mounted, but CBS held their nerve with Jason Kelly slotting home the winner as Francis Dempsey saved Good Counsels last penalty.

The cup came home to Thomas St. as this group win their first bit of silverware for the school. The management team of Mr. J Hegarty, Mr. F Davey and Mr. W Carley were very pleased with both teams. The CBS panel was as follows:

Talent Show

Well done to all those who performed at the Talent Show yesterday It was an excellent show. A wide variety of acts, including music, parkour, dance, comedy and of course the Teacher Act.

School Mass

The school mass was celebrated today in Bride Street by our new school chaplin Fr.James Cullen. He welcomed all the new first years to the school community and encouraged all to do their best in the coming year.

Leinster Golf

The Senior  golfers opened this school years golf season with a visit to Old Conna G.C. for the Leinster Schools  Senior Matchplay qualifier.                                                       

Having qualified for the last eight matchplay last year in Carlow, our team (John Brady( 0), Jack McGarry( 4),Alex Brady(6),Lee Whelan(6) and Seán Hopkins(7))travelled with great hope of a repeat performance this year.

At this stage of the competition the format is each school playing 3 competitors off scratch in    stroke -play  with all 3 cards to count.

Our lads started poorly, all three bogeying the first hole. John Brady went on to bogey the fourth but two birdies at eight and nine had him level at the turn. A birdie,a bogey and two doubles saw him sign for a 4 over 76.

Jack had a poor front nine turning 6 over  but steadied the ship in the back nine to finish 8 over  80.

Alex played very steadily and turned 2 over  and held it together on the back despite doubling the short 14th to finish with a commendable 7 over 79.

 This gave our lads a total of235 which they felt was not good enough.

However when the scores were added up we were second to Gorey C.S. and now qualify for Leinster Matchplay quarter finals where our full team of 5 will play.

Well done to the lads for qualifying for the last eight for the second year running out of the ninety competing schools.

Cycle Against Suicide - Wexford Spinoff

Well done to all of our students who participated in the cycle on Saturday morning. It was the biggest Spinoff to date with over 500 taking part on a beautiful sunny day. The 61k route went through Barntown, Taghmon, Baldwinstown, Kilmore Quay, Bridgetown, Piercestown and back to Wexford Quay front. Once again to message was preached that '' That it is ok not to feel ok, and absolutely ok to ask for help''.

The trees are gone, the gate is closed and the wall is going soon, but life in The Boker goes on.

First Year Newsletter

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

I would like to bring a number of important items to your attention as your son sets out on his journey through secondary school with us.

             School Contacts

1.      It is very important that your son settles into the school quickly and that his early experiences here are positive. If you have any concerns regarding his progress, please contact the school. Each first year class has a Class Tutor. The first year group also has a Year Head. You should address your concerns initially to the Subject Teacher, Class Person or Year Head. However, if your concerns are of a more serious nature, please feel free to make an appointment to meet the Deputy Principal or Principal.

Homework Journal

2.      The homework journal is a very important communication vehicle between you as parents and your son’s teachers. Please ensure that your son has his homework noted in his diary on a daily basis. This journal should be checked every evening for notes etc. from his teachers. Each first year is expected to do at least one and a half hours at homework and study every evening, with some additional time over the weekend. You are expected to sign the diary on a weekly basis. The journal also contains an Individual Merit/Reward Chart. This will be used by teachers to affirm and reward positive behaviour. I would encourage parents to monitor their son’s progress in the chart and perhaps use it to build in home based rewards for their son on reaching agreed target

Personal Property

3.      School jackets are an intrinsic part of the school uniform and have been distributed. Please ensure that your son has written his name on the jacket. Please also ensure that all property belonging to your son has his name on it. This will facilitate reuniting lost property with the rightful owner in the event of items being misplaced.

Uniform

4.      Please ensure that your son comes to school in full uniform every day, unless you are informed otherwise. You will be informed by text in the event of a ‘no uniform day’. Non uniform jackets, hoodies etc. will be confiscated.

Facial Jewellery

5.      Please note that facial jewellery is prohibited and will be confiscated. 

Personal Contact Details

6.      If you change your mobile number, please let us know as you will not be in a position to receive texts from the school. A text message will be sent home in the event of your son not presenting for morning and or afternoon classes. If he is absent without your permission, please contact the school. If your son is absent with your permission, please write a note in his journal explaining the reason. His journal should be presented to all his teachers on his return to school. Please also let us know if you change address.

Mobile Phones

7.      Students are not allowed use phones during class and should have them switched off. Those breaking this rule will have their phones confiscated. They will be returned to the student or parent at the principal’s discretion.

Staying In

8.      As you are aware, first students are not allowed to leave the school premises during the school day unless signed out and collected by a parent/guardian or accompanied by a teacher. Each class group has been assigned a classroom for lunch.

Extra-Curricular Activities

9.      There is a wide range of extracurricular activities on offer in the school. Cycling, swimming, public speaking, Gaelic football, rugby, hurling, golf, soccer, table tennis and basketball are available so I would encourage your son to get involved in one or more of these activities.

Nut Allergy

10.  I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that a number of our students and staff have severe nut allergies. Students should not bring nuts, peanuts, peanut butter sandwiches, nut bars etc. to school. It would be helpful if you had a discussion with your son on the matter and to further impress on him the importance of vigilance on this issue.

Information Evenings

11.  We will be holding information meetings for parents of first years on the following dates and times in the school:

       Mozart/Handel:  Tuesday 29^th September @7.30pm in Room 11

              Beethoven/Vivaldi/Strauss: Tuesday 13^th October 2014 @ 7.30pm in Room 11.  

             You are invited to attend to discuss how your son is settling in, raise issues of concern etc. The 

              meetings will last one hour approximately.

            

             Voluntary Contribution

12.  Thank you to those who paid the Voluntary Contribution. Any parent who has not yet paid and wishes to do so may drop the money into the school office.  This money helps to ensure that the school can pay the electricity, phone and water bills etc.

School Lockers

13.  Lockers have been distributed by the Parents’ Council. Any first year who wishes to rent a locker should contact the school caretaker if he hasn’t already got a locker.

Literacy and Numeracy Campaigns

14.  As part of our literacy campaign, I would ask you to continue to encourage your son to read. Your support and example in this regard are vitally important. We have a number of initiatives in the school promoting literacy including ‘Drop Everything and Read’ and ‘Book in the Bag’. For these initiatives to be successful programme it’s very important that your son brings a novel to school every day. We also organise ‘numeracy moments’ throughout the school year, where all students engage with numeracy challenges.

Parents’ Council

15.  The Parents’ Council would like to encourage parents to become involved with the Council and new members are welcome. The first monthly meeting of the new term is scheduled for Tuesday 29^th September @7.30pm in Room 5. The Parents’ Council AGM is scheduled for Tuesday 6^th October @ 7.30pm in R.11.  

School Mass

16.  The school will celebrate the beginning of the new school year with Mass in Bride Street church on Tuesday 29^th September @12pm. Parents/Guardians are welcome to attend.

Child Protection

17.   Any concerns on child protection or child welfare issues relating to any of our students should be reported to the Designated Liaison Person (Mr. McMahon) or in his absence the Deputy Designated Liaison Person (Mr. Hegarty).

Attendance

18.  Full attendance at school is vital if your son’s learning is to progress and he is to reach his potential. Family holidays etc. should be scheduled outside of the school calendar if at all possible.

School Redevelopment

19.  Work has begun on our school redevelopment project. Health & Safety is of the utmost importance. Students have been given clear instructions not to enter the restricted areas under any circumstances.

Talent Show

20.  The C.B.S. Talent Show will take place on Thursday 1^st October. There will be an afternoon and an evening show. Parent(s)/guardian(s) are invited to the evening show @8pm. Admission for evening show: Students €5/Adults €8. Venue: Dun Mhuire.

Student Leaders

21.  This year we are endeavouring to provide further leadership opportunities for our students. Each First Year class has elected a Class Captain and Class Vice-Captains. These students will represent their classes in meetings with Management, Year Head etc. and will be asked to liaise with Meitheal leaders etc. The First Year representatives (2) on the Students’ Council will be elected from the list of Captains by the First Year cohort. C.B.S. Has Talent

Rehearsals are in full swing for the Annual Talent Show in the Dun Mhuire on Thursday 1st October at 2pm and 8pm. Ms. Kavanagh and Ms. Spellman are currently gilding the production. Good luck to all performers.

Golf

Congratulations to John Brady who has been burning up the golf courses of Ireland during the summer . He is in great form and has figured promimently in many competitions. He won the Connacht Open U.16, came 5th in the Leinster Open U.18, was on the winning Leinster U.16 team in the Interprovincial Championships. He finished 7th in the All Ireland U.16 competition, was on the Leinster U.17 team that drew with Surrey and was in the top 25 in the Irish U.18 Open.
Remarkable achievements indeed. We wish John and the rest of the school team good luck for their Leinster Qualifing tournement in Bray on Monday next.

Cycle Against Suicide

Well done to Kevin Birney who was selected to participate in the C.A.S. Leadership Programme during the summer. He found it to be a wonderful experience and picked up many new skills as well as making new lifelong friends on the course.
Congratulations also to Ms. Ivers who once again led the charge as we reached for Ambassador Status again this year. Our representatives were presented with a plaque in Dublin recently.

Dale Kicks To European Title

Congratulations to Dale White who was in San Sabastian recently for the European Championships in Lau Gar. Dale won the W.A.K.O. kick boxing event to add to his many other previous honours. He heads to Florida for the World W.K.K.C. championships in November, where hopefully he can add another World title to the one he won last year.
