Under 15 Soccer - League Semi-Final

CBS were knocked out of the Schools League at the semi-final stage, they can count themselves unlucky to be, a perfectly converted goal by Eoin Doyle was dubiously called for offside and disallowed, preventing Wexford forcing extra-time. Eoin had scored Wexford’s opening goal also.

David Leaps To UK Title

Congratulations to first year David McDonald who won the boys' Under 15 long jump title at the All-England Athletics Indoor championships in the National Indoor Arena in Bermingham on Sunday last. David broke his PB with a jump of 6.16m.

Well Done Collie

Congratulations to Collie Joyce-Ahearne who lined out for Ireland U.18 rugby team v Italy at the weekend. The game ended 16-16.

Juvenile Hurling

This game was played in Baltic conditions in Power Park and a late goal from Jordan Hayes clinched victory for CBS after a very entertaining game.
The home side struck for an early goal following indecision in the CBS defence. However CBS gradually got on top but found it very difficult to get scores. Cody Murphy converted a free in the 9^th minute and moments later Jack O’Leary did great work to make room for Cormac Byrne to split the posts.
It got much better for CBS when Jack O’Leary pulled on the ball and his powerful shot found the net which levelled the game at 1-2 each. CBS had plenty of chances for scores but failed to take them.
That was the score at half-time when both sides made changes to their teams.
The cold conditions got to the players as the scores dried up. St. Peter’s surged ahead with two points to lead by 1-4 to 1-2 entering the closing stages of the match but Jordan Hayes pounced on the ball following a scramble in the goalmouth to clinch victory.
CBS face Enniscorthy CBS in the first round of the South Leinster Juvenile B championship next Wednesday.

South Leinster Senior Football ‘C’Final

A dominant wind assisted first half by Kildare school Ard Scoil Rathangan was enough to see off any hopes of Wexford CBS claiming the South Leinster Senior Football ‘C’ title at Eire Og, Carlow last Friday.
The Wexford lads were trailing by 1-9 to 0-3 at the break and found it difficult to handle the bigger and better Kildare students. They racked up the points rather too easily and had the CBS defence in bother with a sharp attacking unit led by Stefan Lawlor.
The CBS forwards found it very hard to get possession and all they had to show for the first half were three points by Joe Coleman, Sean Stafford and Jamie McDonnell.
Any hopes that the wind would lead to a change in fortunes for the Boker boys were quickly dashed as Rathangan cleverly kept control of the game. CBS tried their best to get back into the match but their efforts were well contained by the Kildare defence.
Sean Stafford notched a second point and Eoin Roche got the fifth point for Wexford CBS but they needed goals to cut the deficit and chances were few and far between.
Corner-back Jason Kearns is the only team member sitting the Leaving Certificate in June so this team will be largely intact next year and if they increase their efforts a South Leinster title is within their grasp.
Best on the day for the CBS - coached by Wexford senior footballer Cillian Kehoe and Peter Kirwan - were Evan Dunbar, Jamie McDonnell and Sean Stafford.

Juvenile Hurling - Challenge Match

In their first match of the season, the juvenile hurlers took on the St. Peter’s College ‘B’ team in a highly competitive challenge game played in poor conditions.
Despite the sticky pitch and the light rain, both sets of players gave 100% commitment which was very encouraging.
Cody Murphy opened the scoring with a nice point before the home side equalised. However CBS struck for the lead point from Kevin Corrigan’s converted ’65.
Jordan Hayes cut in from his corner in the 17^th minute and found the net with a stinging shot which gave the Boker boys a commanding lead considering the conditions.
St. Peter’s struck back with a goal of their own and they were keeping CBS goal minder Adam Howlin very busy.
Kevin Corrigan and Jordan registered a point each before the half-time whistle to leave CBS ahead by 1-4 to 1-2.
Wexford CBS Jack O’Leary grabbed two second half points compared to a sole St. Peter’s point as scores were very hard to achieve in the wet and miserable conditions.
Best for CBS were  Cormac Byrne, Nicky Kelly, Shane Pierce, Kevin Corrigan, Cathal Kirwan and Jordan Hayes.

The Bokerboys took their first ever Section 'B' scalp today when they defeated Templeogue College in Park Lane, Wexford today on a 20-17 scoreline. Two tries from Collie Joyce-Ahearne, two conversions and two penalties from Sean Stafford. A truly memorable victory. Outstanding performances from Conor Fenlon, James Roche, James Byrne and Steve Roche. Well done lads, super season goes on.

School Talent Search - South Leinster Final

There was no shortage of tough competition last night at the South Leinster Final of the "All Ireland Schools Talent Search". Thirty acts representing schools from all over the south east battled it out in aid of the Cheerios Childline Appeal. Among the talented competitors were three well renowned acts from Wexford C.B.S., each of whom gave outstanding performances!

Marty Mullally impressed the crowd with a song of his own creation - "'Til the Clocks Run Out". L.M.J. (Luke Jackson, Marty Mullally and Jack Robinson) stunned the audience to an awestruck silence with their own unique rendition of "Titanium" and The Krew (Danny Fitzpatrick, Nathan Donovan and Chris Murphy Kehoe) ended the show on a high note with their harmonious performance of Coldplay's "Fix You".

Fourteen acts on the night progressed to the next round with the top three winning cash prizes also.  Both The Krew and Marty Mullally now move on to compete in the All Ireland Semi Final of the competition having ranked in the top fourteen. Congratulations to both acts, especially Marty who came in 3rd place and received a cash prize of €250 for his efforts. Commiserations to LMJ who, despite being plagued with illness over the past week, gave a fantastic performance on the night. Unfortunately they will not progress any further.

The pen-ultimate round, the All Ireland Semi Final, will take place on the 23/24 February.

Soccer U.15 Win

Wexford C.B.S......4  Kilmuckridge V.C..........1

Wexford CBS U-15 travelled to Arklow Town’s all weather pitch to play Kilmuckridge VC in the quarter final of the Wicklow Wexford School League. Strong winds and heavy rain made conditions very challenging. CBS played with a strong gale at their backs in the first half.

The wild conditions made the game very scrappy with neither team threatening early on. CBS had two good chances late in the first half but Kilmuckridge defended both well. CBS sub: Ryan Busher for Cormac Byrne. Rain got heavier and the game deteriorated. Passes were misplaced and ball control was problematic on the greasy surface. Half-Time 0-0

Second Half

A mix-up in the CBS defence led to a speculative effort from Kilmuckridge’s midfielder. CBS goalkeeper Conor Coleman let the ball slip from his grasp and into the net, Kilmuckridge 1-0 Wexford. Wexford’s urgency was now evident, they attacked at will. Dylan Ennis missed a good opportunity. Minutes later Dylan was put through again and this time made no mistake. 1-1.

Wexford’s back four of Alex Lohier, Ryan Byrne, Kevin Harte and Mark Doyle were well on top now. Liam Rockett broke down the left and crossed for Matthew Creane to head home, 2-1 Wexford. Kilmuckridge’s spirit was now broken. Wexford Sub: Cathal Kirwan for Ryan Busher.

Wexford broke forward again, Matthew crossed for Eoin Doyle to slot home Wexford’s third. CBS sub: Micheal Lalor for Dylan Ennis. Kilmuckridge pushed forward looking for a way back into the game.

Conor Coleman made two good saves in quick succession and Wexford defended bravely. CBS once again broke forward, Micheal Lalor supplying the pass for Eoin Doyle to score his second. 4-1.

In the remaining few minutes the scrappy play returned as conditions seemed to worsen.

Congratulations Collie - Inter Pro Champion

Well done to Collie Joyce-Ahearne who has finished off a remarkable fortnight of rugby. Having led the school senior team to our first Leinster title in Donnybrook recently, on Saturday last he led the pack as Leinster won the Youths Inter Pro Final against Connacht in Mullingar, he was one of only two players to play every minute of all five games.

South Leinster Senior Football ‘C’ semi-final

After Extra-Time

WEXFORD CBS qualified for the South Leinster Football ‘C’ final following this narrow four point extra-time victory over a gallant Colaiste Eoin (Hacketstown) side last Wednesday in Eire Og’s pitch in Carlow.
CBS had to dig deep to earn this victory and it was heartening to see the team display guts and determination to come from behind in normal time, take a one point lead at the death but see their opponents force extra time with the last kick of the match.
However, the Wexford students regrouped during extra-time to forge ahead and they even managed to keep the Carlow side scoreless during the second period of extra-time to grind out the victory and seal their place in the South Leinster final.
CBS, with all but one of the team available again next year, were slow out of the blocks and suffered as Colaiste Eoin surged ahead with two goals in the opening stages. The Boker boys rallied and came into the game with goals from Ciaran Kirwan and Joe Coleman but they still trailed at half-time by 2-7 to 2-3.
Eoin Roche’s pointed frees were instrumental in CBS clawing their way back into the game as the Hacketstown defenders found it difficult to handle the CBS attack and had to resort to fouling in an effort to halt them.
Wing-back Sean Donohue made a welcome comeback following a lengthy injury and he galloped up from wing-back on two occasions to slot over points. Hacketstown were under pressure at this stage and when Ciaran Kirwan found the net, it looked good for CBS.
However, a last minute point from the Carlow school left the score at 3-9 to 2-12 and thus forced extra-time. The Wexford school out-pointed the opposition by four points to two in the first period of extra-time as Eoin Roche (two from play), Nicky Lawlor and Jamie McDonnell put their side in front at the turn-around by 3-13 to 2-14.
The hard work was nearly done at that stage as the Carlow boys wilted and failed to score for the remainder of the game. Eoin Roche and Joe Coleman powered ahead and rounded off the game with points as the CBS boys celebrated a fine victory.
Best on the day for CBS, who had good performances from all 15, were Evan Dunbar, hard-working centre-back Liam Barry, Jamie McDonnell, Joe Coleman, Eoin Roche and Ciaran Kirwan.
Their final opponents are unknown but will come from the Kildare and Wicklow side of the draw.

Anti-Bullying Week

This week we are having an Anti-Bullying programme in school which will highlight the dos and don'ts of bullying. It will include talks, poster competitions, movies, researched facts and ststistics relating to bullying, internet safety and cyber-bullying talks for parents.The later which is on Thursday evening 24th Jan. at 7.30pm in Room 11.

Under 17 Soccer

On Tuesday 15^th of January the under 17 soccer side of Wexford CBS bowed out of the Wicklow Wexford league at the ¼ final stage. The Boker boys had home advantage and will be bitterly disappointed after this defeat. The game started very brightly for the home side as they completely dominated for the opening 25 minutes of the first half, playing some lovely football in the process, as they tested Carnew on a number of occasions. This pressure resulted in Cian Doyle giving the CBS the lead after about 10 minutes. Eoghan Whitty started the move from the right back position as he switched the play with a lovely cross field pass which found Mark Doyle who then switched the play back to the right again with a ball over the top which Eoin MacDonald ran onto, he turned and laid the ball into the path of Cian Doyle who, with some lovely footwork beat two Carnew defenders before firing a shot to the roof of the net to give the CBS a well-deserved lead and finish off a great team move with a fine goal. CBS continued to dominate proceedings and were guilty of pushing too far forward on occasion, Carnew punished them for this as they counter-attacked with a ball over the top and their pacey centre forward ran onto it and was one on one with Shane McGrath and he finished with a well-placed shot to the bottom corner of the net 1-1. Carnew now began to find their way into the game and really got stuck in and made a game of it as they began to put CBS under pressure. The away side attacked down the left and their winger out-muscled Eoghan Whitty and followed through into another one on one position and finished past Shane McGrath via the post to give Carnew a 2-1 lead at half time.

The second half saw a rejuvenated CBS side look to take the game to their opponents, as they began to move the ball around with real purpose. Jessie Farrell attempted a pass back towards the centre of defence but this was intercepted and Carnew’s number 9 really made Wexford pay for a lapse in concentration with a stunning finish from outside the box into the top corner of the net to make the score 3-1 and leave the CBS with a mountain to climb. The CBS almost had an immediate response as straight from the kick-off as some good one touch football from Eoin MacDonald and Cian Doyle played in Jessie Farrell who finished well but unfortunately saw his effort ruled out for offside. CBS now began to pile on the pressure and Carnew soaked this up well as they defended in large numbers and always looked to hit on the counter-attack. CBS were pushing forward and urged on by captain Richie Kearney. Shane McGrath’s long ball caught out Carnew as Jessie Farrell raced in to finish well to make the score 3-2. The CBS now threw everything forward but Carnew were defending resolutely. Captain Richie Kearney was taken down in the box, but no penalty was awarded. With now only minutes remaining the CBS were throwing everything forward as they looked to find an equaliser. Substitute Dylan Dixon met Jessie Farrell’s cross well in the air but saw his header crash off the crossbar and come back out. Dylan Dixon found space in the box again and hit a volley which clipped the cprssbar again before going over. George Cullen saw his shot spilled by the keeper and fall to Jessie Farrell who attempted a backheel which was somehow blocked down by a Carnew defender on the line. Richie Kearney was again taken down in the box but again no penalty was awarded in what was a frantic finish as Carnew hit on the counter-attack and forced Shane McGrath into making an outstanding save as he tipped a rocket of a shot over the bar. With time now running out for the CBS substitute Tadhg Dunleavy saw his deflected free kick hit the post before running out for a corner kick. Unfortunately for the CBS the final whistle came too soon. The CBS will be bitterly disappointed at going out at this stage as they were the reiging under 16 champions from last year, but credit to Carnew who defended very well and took their chances when they came. It finished as a season of what if’s for this CBS side. Best on the day for the CBS were Cian Doyle, Mark Doyle and John Hamilton.

Senior Soccer - Walsh’s Wonder Strike Seals Memorable Win

On Thursday 17^th of January the Wexford CBS produced a breath-taking display to beat a very highly fancied Arklow CBS in the ¼ final of the Senior Wicklow/Wexford league competition. The senior side of Wexford CBS had not quite played up to their level yet this season having struggled to qualify from their group relying on Enniscorthy to get a result against Bridgetown to ensure qualification to the knockout stages as runners up. However this team has a lot of ability with the majority of the squad having played in the last two campaigns reaching the final both years, and they finally played to their potential against a very good Arklow CBS team. The opening exchanges saw Wexford trying to ensure they took a foothold in the game by moving the ball around nicely. It was Arklow CBS who drew first blood, a long ball over the top was chased down by Arklow attackers and Wexford defenders, Dale Scallan attempted to head back to keeper Jamie MacDonnell but he under-played it and an Arklow forward nipped in to finish past the helpless keeper to give Arklow a 1-0 lead inside 5 minutes. Wexford responded with some good attacking football as they retained the ball very well and John Bridges came close to finding an equaliser. The Wexford side soon managed to get themselves level, Cian Doyle was taken down on the left wing and Dale Scallan stepped up to take the resulting free kick, he fired an effort goal wards which was flicked on by John Bridges and an Arklow defender but did not change direction before finding the top corner of the net 1-1.

Wexford CBS continued to press but Arklow CBS came back into the game and put some pressure on the Wexford CBS defence who were defending very well. The Bokerboys will be disappointed that they conceded a soft free kick on the edge of the area, from the resulting free Arklow hit a well drilled effort which was save by MacDonnell but he didn’t hold onto it and the rebound was tapped into the net by an Arklow forward on the half hour mark 2-1. Wexford CBS began to look for an equaliser and were enjoying the majority of possession with Conor Clancy and Evan Dunbar really beginning to enforce themselves in midfield as they dominated the centre of the field winning a lot of ball in the air and on the ground as the Wexford side really began to get on top. Full back Richie Kearny took the ball on the edge of the area and forced a good save from the Arklow keeper, the home side counter-attacked and Jamie MacDonnell made a crucial save from a one on one to keep the Bokerboys within one goal of their opponents. CBS responded well and soon levelled; Conor Clancy won the ball in the centre and played a lovely ball out wide to Cian Doyle who gave a neat pass into John Bridges who turned one defender before squaring the ball to Danny Fitzpatrick who placed a lovely shot into the bottom right corner of the net 2-2. Wexford continued to press but didn’t manage to take the lead before the half-time whistle.

The second half saw Wexford CBS really step up their performance as they really took the game to their opponents. Dylan Walsh and Cian Doyle were posing a real threat from the wings and John Bridges and Danny Fitzpatricks link up play was causing real problems for the Arklow defence. Wexford soon took a deserved lead, after Dylan Walsh and John Bridges combined well before switching the play to Cian Doyle who with some fancy footwork took the ball around two opponents before giving a pass to Bridges who again squared a neat ball to Danny Fitzpatrick who once again placed a shot to the corner of the net 3-2. Wexford continued to press and were enjoying the majority of possession with Danny Fitz really giving the Arklow backline a nightmare as he looked to run at them every time he received the ball. The Bokerboys doubled their lead after about 55 minutes in the game, Dylan Walsh scoring with a wonderful strike. Wexford had a corner and John Bridges was sharp enough to give a short pass to Walsh who had a little bit of time before looking up and unleashing a fabulous strike from out wide which hit the top corner of the net leaving the Arklow keeper with no chance and giving the away side a 4-2 lead. Arklow to their credit looked to attack straight away and put the Wexford lads under a lot of pressure but found Dale Scallan, Jason Kearns, Richie Kearney and Aaron McMahon in no mood to concede as they defended brilliantly. John Bridges dropped himself back into the centre of the field and was leading by example as he encouraged his team mates. Dylan Walsh was now full of confidence and was really giving the left back on the Arklow side a torrid time of it as his trickery brought him by him again and again, he managed to get himself into the box but finished poorly and the keeper made a comfortable save. A long ball over the top of an exposed Arklow defence was flicked on by the head of Danny Fitzpatrick who saw the keeper coming out of his goal and lobbed his shot for an exquisite finish and complete a memorable hat-trick. Arklow managed a consolation goal in injury time with a well-placed free kick from their impressive centre-half. At the other end substitute Jessie Farrell will be disappointed that he couldn’t manage a finish from close range after more good work from Danny Fitzpatrick.

Overall this was a great win for the Wexford CBS, they started the game as under-dogs and twice had to come from behind before they really managed to show their quality and beat a very good Arklow side in some style. This was an excellent team performance and the Boker boys will again have to be at their best when they face East Glendalough in the semi-final of the competition. Best on the day for the Wexford CBS from a very impressive performance were Dale Scallan, John Bridges, Dylan Walsh, and Danny Fitzpatrick.

What a wonderful day it was. Arriving in Donnybrook, the traditional home of Leinster Rugby to play a Leinster Schools Final. This competition started with over 40 teams last October, along the way we accounted for Enniscorthy C.B.S., New Ross C.B.S.,Colaiste Bhride, Carnew and Cill Mantain, Wicklow. All these games were comfortably won and earned us the right to meet Ratoath C.C in the final.

Taking the field in a well prepared mode and confident in our ability and discipline, it was going to take a good performance to get the better of us.

The plan was to secure and protect the ball, be patient, identify and strike at their weaknesses. Within two minutes we had successfully done that. Their scrum was pounded, their defence battered and then swift movement of the ball across the backline, gave winger Ruairi Devereux the opportunity to burn past their defensive line, with blistering pace, 5-0.Ratoath recovered the restart and drove deep into Wexford territory and were rewarded with a penalty, which was converted. 5-3 and only 6 minutes gone. Game back on. Eoin Roche , at out half controlled superbly at No.10 and kicked Wexford into the corner, from the next possession Ratoath were pinged for offside. Sean Stafford added three points from the penalty. 8-3.

Another restart gathered, and Ratoath were once again back in the Wexford 22’, another penalty conceded and converted brought them right back, 8-6, and all the signs of a cracking game in store . Wexford were enjoying the upper hand in the tight areas, with the ‘ pick and go’ operating very well. Flanker Gavin Byrne finished off one such attack to stretch the lead to 13-6. Ratoath came right back and they bagan to open up the play to engage their strong running back line a bit more, however when their centre was nailed in a tackle by Collie Joyce-Ahearne, who retrieved the ball and proceeded up field on a 60m run, he drew in the last defender and set the supporting Eoin Roche on his way to a try under the posts. Sean Stafford converted, 18-6. Killer blow. Following another Ratoath attack, they managed to cross the try line, but Wexford defenders, Michael Maguire and David Kavanagh managed to hold the ball up, Wexford won the resulting scrum against the head, and danger was averted.

The second half began with Wexford receiving the ball, once again Eoin Roche, who was now giving a masterclass in tactical kicking, pinned back the opposition, again our forwards rampaged and Gavin Byrne scored his second try of the afternoon, Stafford converted. 25-6. Do or die time for Ratoath and in fairness they created a chance and took it well, adding 7 points to their tally. 25-13, 12 minutes of the second half gone. Had we allowed them back, were we slipping, not a chance. Three tries in 8 minutes did serious damage and elevated Wexford into a dream position. Mikey Roche finished off two backline moves , while Ciaran Kavanagh, in for the injured James Roche, picked from the back of a 5m scrum and charged. Even The Great Wall of China would have crumbled. Sean Stafford converted two of these and at 44-13, a glance at the Cup sitting on a platform up in the stand, brought a broad smile upon our faces.

The scent of the kill was in the nostrils and Darragh Commisky crashed over to bring our score to 49, Eoin Roche added the conversion, 51-13, five minutes remaining.

Showing true determination, Ratoath wanted one more surge for their travelling fans, and they managed to breach the Wexford line in the last play of the game. Following the conversion, the final whistle blew , and joy erupted, Leinster Champions, how sweet.

This was a clinically executed game plan, managed and controlled from start to finish. Virtually the entire team has another campaign at Senior level ahead, already the thoughts of next year are being discussed

South Leinster Senior Football ‘C’ Quarter-Final

A strong second half performance saw Wexford CBS through to the last four of the South Leinster Senior Football ‘C’ championship when they overpowered the Thomastown students in Pairc Charman last Friday.
CBS led by 1-5 to 1-2 at the break but they eventually wore down their Kilkenny opponents with a burst of scores in the third quarter while the Wexford defence only conceded one point in that second period.
Sean Stafford grabbed the first goal for the Boker boys but CBS couldn’t shake off the Grennan lads despite dominating possession. The heavy conditions ensured the going was tough but both sets of players ensured the match was a sporting one.
CBS took off in the new half when corner forward Eoin Roche added a goal to his three points from the first half. Michael Lawlor tagged on two points while Joe Coleman and Jamie McDonnell also added points.
The full-forward line for CBS proved to be lethal as they finished with all but three points of the team’s total. Joe Coleman sealed the win when he finished a well worked move in the 57^th minute by lashing the ball to the net.
Best for CBS, who are managed by Wexford senior footballer Killian Kehoe, were John Forde, Evan Dunbar, Jamie McDonnell, Ciaran Kirwan and Eoin Roche. Next up is an away semi-final versus Colaiste Eoin Hacketstown.
