South Leinster Juvenile ‘B’ Hurling championship: Tuesday February 28th, 2012
Gorey Community School...........2-12
Wexford C.B.S............................1-11
Wexford C.B.S. put in a brave performance in this South Leinster Juvenile ‘B’ Hurling Championship clash in Parc Charman on Tuesday before Gorey Community School ran out winners by four points.
The opening exchanges were even until Gorey’s excellent centre-forward Conor Levingstone scored two brilliant points to get his side off the mark. CBS responded with brace of points from their centre-forward Stephen ‘Turk’ Kearney to tie up the score.
That was how the game remained until the 19th minute when disaster struck for CBS when Levingstone went on a mazy run but his shot on goal was hooked and the breaking ball fell to the Gorey full-forward who buried the ball in the net.
There was more trouble in the 26th minute when a Gorey forward got inside the defence and gave Shane McGrath no chance in the CBS goal. The Bokerboys were creating plenty of chances but they hit twelve first half wides which did a lot of harm. Stephen Kearney tapped over a free before the break to leave his sides trailing by nine points (2-6 to 0-3).
Two quick points from Turk were answered by Gorey with two points of their own but CBS got a run on their opponents in the third quarter as they sharpened up their shooting and began to cut out the silly mistakes.
Turk placed Kevin Corrigan for a nice point before Stephen Rossiter found Kevin Birney and he flashed the ball over the bar (2-8 to 0-7). It was obvious CBS needed a goal but Gorey’s defence held firm.
Gorey surged further ahead with two points but CBS answered with points from Turk Kearney (two), Stephen Rossiter (free) and Liam Rockett to leave the score at 2-12 to 0-11.
The goal CBS needed arrived in the 55th minute courtesy of a blistering 21 yard free from Turk but at the other end CBS keeper Shane McGrath had to be alert to keep out a shot from Conor Levingstone.
Try as they might, CBS couldn’t close the gap any further and the Gorey lads ran out four point winners.

South Leinster Juvenile C Football Final
Ardscoil Rath Iomaghain............ 4-14
Wexford CBS.............................. 5-1
ANY HOPES that Wexford CBS would complete a notable hat-trick of South Leinster juvenile football titles for County Wexford were quickly dashed in Eire Og’s pitch in Carlow last Tuesday as Ardscoil Rath Iomaghain (Kildare) dealt clinically with the Wexford town school.
so far this year Good Counsel (New Ross) have won the ‘A’ title while Enniscorthy CBS claimed the ‘B’ title and a victory for the Bokerboys in this ‘C’ final would have been a fine achievement for the county.
However, at half-time the Rathangan lads had an unassailable lead of 4-11 to 0-0 after playing with the strong wind but don’t be fooled by the wind factor – the Kildare lads were sharper and played some lovely football in that opening half to leave the CBS team stunned.
The tables were turned somewhat in the second half as CBS set about restoring some pride and they dominated the play and scoring but the mountain was far too steep to climb.
The opening exchanges were promising for Wexford CBS and the game was scoreless for the first five minutes but after that the Kildare boys completely took over.
They had some very exciting forwards especially wing-forward Jimmy Hyland who tortured the CBS defence with his mazy incisive runs. It was 2-4 to 0-0 after fifteen minutes and the agony continued as Ardscoil’s forwards enjoyed copious amounts of possession to constantly add to their ever-increasing first half score.
The Wexford CBS team was re-jigged a number of times in an effort to stem the onslaught but nothing worked for them. Losing centre-back Mikey Lawlor to injury in the week before the game didn’t help their cause either.
The referee’s half-time whistle was very welcome to the CBS players who made a valiant effort to regroup.
A good start to the second half was vital for CBS’s wind-assisted comeback and they got it when Darragh Rossiter and Conor Coleman were involved in a move which resulted in Shane McGrath blasting the ball to the net.
Minutes later McGrath converted a free and Stephen Kearney made the CBS score 2-1 in the 41st minute when he found the net with a stinging shot. Team captain Darragh Rossiter went close with a low shot which was inches away from the net but CBS’s third goal arrived in the 45th minute when Dylan Dixon pounced on a sloppy clearance from Ardscoil ‘keeper Conor Mulligan and lobbed the ball over his head and into the net.
CBS maintained their charge even though time was running out and they managed to keep the Kildare side scoreless in the second half until the final few minutes when Jimmy Hyland (2) and Paul Maloney scored points on counter-attacks.
CBS grabbed a fourth goal when Darragh Rossiter passed to Shane McGrath who calmly slotted away his second goal and in the 56th minute a nice move involving Stephen Kearney and Garry Cullen resulted in Adam Carroll palming the ball to the net.
It was a disastrous day for Wexford CBS but they fought like tigers in the second half to go home with some degree of pride and their best displays came from Daniel Lynch, Eoin Doyle, Darragh Rossiter, Stephen Kearney and Shane McGrath.
Ardscoil Rath Iomaghain: Conor Mulligan; Conor Jameson, Austin Bolger Hynes, Stephen Geoghan; Daryl Dunne, Cian O’Neill, Shane Maughan; Eoin Synott, Ciaran Maher; Jimmy Hyland (0-7, 4 frees), Paul Maloney (0-2), Joe Breen (2-0); Darragh Malone (1-1), Shane O’Brien (0-3), Aaron Teehan (1-1).
Wexford CBS: Nigel Donoghue (Glynn-Barntown); Padraig Rossiter (St. Martin’s), Daniel Lynch (Sarsfields), Aaron McGuire (Volunteers); Aaron Goodison (Volunteers), Darragh Rossiter (St. Martin’s Capt.), Eoin Doyle (Sarsfields); Stephen Kearney (Sarsfields 1-0), Dylan Dixon (Blackwater 1-0); Liam Rockett (Shelmaliers), Jessie Farrell (Volunteers), Conor Coleman (St. Martin’s); Alan Browne (Volunteers), Shane McGrath (Sarsfields 2-1, 0-1 free), Adam Carroll (Sarsfields 1-0).
Subs: Gary Cullen (Volunteers) for P. Rossiter, Aaron Smythe (Volunteers) for Farrell, Kevin Harte (Shelmaliers) for Coleman, Mikey Lawlor (Volunteers), Jack Houghton (Sarsfields), Lee Busher (Clonard), Kevin Corrigan (Blackwater), Chris Cowman (Shelmaliers), Paul Bailey (Sarsfields), Tony Crosbie (Volunteers), Cody Murphy (unattached), Danny Walsh (Sarfields).

Wexford CBS...................2-7 St. Peter’s College...........4-2
A couple of late goals denied the juvenile hurlers a victory in this well contested practise match at a bitter cold Power Park. However it was an excellent work out in preparation for the South Leinster B Championship and the Rice Cup in March.
CBS started very well with Conor Coleman somehow squeezing the ball between the posts from a very tight angle. St. Peter’s responded with 1-1 before Stephen Kearney pointed to leave the score at 1-1 to 0-2.
To prove that his first point wasn’t a fluke Conor Coleman squeezed another one over after 15 minutes but CBS were rocked with the concession of another goal shortly afterwards.
CBS dominated the rest of the half with Dylan Dixon converting a free and then came the score of the game when Liam Rockett and Conor Coleman combined to set up Stephen Kearney for a sweet point. Stephen Kearney then set up Conor Coleman for his third point to leave the score at 2-2 to 0-6 at the break.
St. Peter’s dominated the start of the second half and grabbed their third goal to build up a four point lead but Lee Busher pounced for the first of his two goals following a period of pressure after a good attacking run from Conor Coleman.
Minutes later Dylan Dixon went on a searing run but his stinging shot was parried by the keeper and Busher was quickest to react again and batted the ball over the line. St. Peter’s grabbed their fourth goal in the 56th minute and the final score of the game arrived when Darragh Rossiter surged upfield and passed to Stephen Rossiter who fired a long range point.
Wexford CBS: Shane McGrath; Kevin Harte, Daniel Lynch, Cormac Byrne; Eoin Doyle, Darragh Rossiter, Padraig Rossiter; Dylan Dixon (0-1 free), Kevin Birney; Liam Rocket, Stephen Rossiter (0-1), Gary Cullen; Conor Coleman (0-3), Stephen Kearney (0-2), Kevin Corrigan.
Subs: Lee Busher (2-0) for Gary Cullen, Aaron McGuire for Kevin Corrigan, Peter Ryan for Kevin Harte, TJ Ferguson for Kevin Birney, Aaron Smyth for Cormac Byrne, Paul Bailey for Eoin Doyle, Sean Hopkins for Conor Coleman
