Wexford CBS 8 – 2 St.Aidans C.S Tallaght
Wexford CBS progress in style
Wexford CBS advanced to the second round of the Leinster
shield in serious style at Wexford Celtic defeating Robbie Keane’s former
school by a huge margin. In truth it was the away side that started stronger as
their central midfield really got on top in this game and moved the ball about
well, they did lack a cutting edge up front as the Bokerboys defended
comfortably enough Ryan Byrne leading the line at centre half alongside Jason
Nolan who kept their opponents at bay. CBS took the lead from their first real
attack after 10 minutes Adam Carrol linked up well with Gary Cullen before
finding a neat finish to beat the away keeper. The away side rallied and
enjoyed a lot of possession without ever really threatening. The Bokerboys
doubled their lead midway through the first half Gary Cullen found Luke O’Neill
with a defence splitting pass on the right wing and his cross was met powerfully
by T.J Cousins who found the top corner to double the lead. The CBS were now
well on top and it was soon 3-0 Gary Cullen combined well with Cousins with a
neat one two before playing it to Adam Carroll who found Cousins again with an
angled pass Cousins was surrounded in the box but finished it with an
exceptional strike to find the top corner with a curling effort. The Bokerboys
almost were caught napping as a defensive mix up gave the ball back to Adam
Dempsey and he scuffed his clearance into the path of an attacker who was only
yards from goal he instinctively struck an effort only to be astounded by the
world class save produced by Dempsey to redeem himself after a mistake. Half
time 3-0.
In the second half the CBS having learned from their encounter
against Bridgetown came out and really took the game to St.Aidans T.J Cousins
completed his hat-trick within minutes following a fine team move. The
Bokerboys began to ring the changes but the goals didn’t stop coming Dylan
O’Regan was introduced and his first action was to gain possession out wide
from the box before curling in a beautiful cross to Cousins who scored his 4th
5-0. O’Reagan himself added a 6th making a fool of the keeper with a
fantastic turn of the ball before tapping into an empty net. St.Aidans did
manage to pull one back through their impressive central midfielder. O’Regan
again was involved as the Bokerboys added a 7th playing in fellow
sub Jamie Thomas who left his opposing defenders for dead before letting rip
and firing a shot to the roof of the net leaving the keeper with no chance.
St.Aidans broke and added another to make it 7-2 as the game wound down. Dylan
O’Regan was taken down in the box in the dying minutes and captain Gary Cullen
stepped up to calmly slot home a well-deserved goal. The boys progress to the 2nd
round in style after the floodgates opened here in this game. An excellent team
performance again with a number of subs getting involved and ensuring no drop
in the level of performance. This team is really finding their stride now and
if they continue to play like this should reap rewards by the end of the
season.
