Wexford CBS 1 – 0 Tallaght C.S
Bokerboys ensure home ¼ final fixture
Wexford CBS continued their impressive season with a hard
fought but deserved victory over Tallaght Community School in Wexford Celtic.
After enjoying a free-flowing open game in the previous round, the Bokerboys
saw an entirely different side to Tallaght in this game as their opponents were
very well organised and a much more resilient outfit. This game was a real
battle throughout and the opening 20 minutes was pretty much a constant battle
for supremacy taking place in the middle of the field. After 15 minutes Wexford
almost opened the scoring, Lee Busher gathered possession on the right flank
took on and beat two players before lobbing in a cross which almost caught the
keeper unawares but he managed to get a hand to it at the last second and put
it out for a corner. Tallaght responded well and gradually began to exert more
pressure on the CBS aided by a strong wind. A defensive mix up between Jason
Nolan and keeper Adam Dempsey played in their nippy centre forward into a one
on one position he fired an effort goalwards but Adam Dempsey produced a
marvellous save to keep the scores level. Chances were few and far between in
this game with the ball being worked well by both sides however when either
team got forward, both defences coped admirably in a game were the defence was
well and truly on top. Liam Rockett and TJ Cousins up front for the CBS were
finding it difficult to find any space whatsoever as their opponents sat deep
and packed their midfield. Aaron McGuire was having an excellent game and was involved
in a fine move combing with Gary Cullen and Liam Rockett before playing a neat
pass into the path of Luke O’Neill into an excellent position but the ref
called a marginal offside. Tallaght upped their tempo towards the end of the
half and piled forward but excellent defending by the entire CBS backline
ensured they were allowed no efforts on goal.
The second half began in a different manner; the home side
really took the game to their opponents, Tallaght however defended well Cormac
Byrne and Gary Cullen were beginning to win the midfield battle. This was
proving to be a tight contest and in truth the first team to score would always
be the team to win. Thankfully it was the CBS who managed to break the deadlock
with an excellent goal, Aaron McGuire picked up possession in his own half and
carried it forward before releasing an exquisite defence splitting pass into
the path of Lee Busher who beat one player before rifling an effort to the roof
of the net leaving the keeper with no chance. As the game wore on the CBS
exerted control over the remainder, Tallaght C.S poured everything they had
forward including their keeper for a corner but it was to no avail as the CBS
defence was in no mood to concede on the day, Matthew Creane almost added
another just before the finish, the final whistle blew and the Bokerboys were
jubilant after a hard-fought victory. Another impressive performance for the
Bokerboys and an important win the boys will now meet Arklow CBS in the ¼ final
at home after the Christmas holidays. The games will only get tougher from here
on out but if this team can at least maintain the level of performance shown so
far, or even look to improve upon it they stand every chance of going to whole
way. Best on the day for the CBS were Aaron McGuire, Ryan Byrne and man of the
match Lee Busher.
