As we arrived at the ground, it was evident that the pitch wasn’t quite up to the standards that the team were used to. It was a far cry from the luxury of the Watershed, the pitch they had played on just a few weeks beforehand. With no obvious pitch markings and holes for penalty spots, the team soon realized that they were in for a scrappy affair.

After a very shaky start to the game, with no team on top, Cian Foley’s fantastic goal line clearance seemed to kick the lads into gear. From there they began to truly exert their dominance. No more than 5 minutes later, we were ahead. A fantastic bit of team play was finished off by a tidy finish from Luke O’Neill. Ryan Busher then added to the tally with a tap in from 3 yards, following a great cross from Jamie Thomas.

The home team showed very little signs of retaliation, except for one instance which our centre back Seán Hopkins will want to forget as soon as possible. The Carnew striker nutmegged Seán, and as he tried to recover, the striker nutmegged him again. An embarrassed Seán tried to laugh it off, but it was clear to all those watching that he was truly devastated.

A very blatant penalty claim from us was somehow turned down, with Kallum Broaders being on the receiving end of an awful challenge in the box. The referee, however, saw nothing wrong with the tackle and waved play on. The team were not discouraged however, and soon they made it 3-0. A lovely 1-2 between Jamie Thomas and Luke O’Neill was finished nicely by Jamie. The goal was followed swiftly by another goal from Jamie Thomas, this time a curler from the edge of the box, which hits of the crossbar and goes in. Sweet as a nut *click*.

The final goal for CBS was the pick of the lot. A great cross from Paddy O’Reilly was finished with a thunderbolt of a header from Luke Dowdall. The header is a shoe-in for the Puskas Award in January.

The goal finished off a great overall performance from the lads, which was, despite some dodgy defending, tough to pick holes in.

U15 Soccer Leinster Cup First Round

Wexford CBS 1-3 CCA Kilcoole

Our U15 soccer squad lost out to CCA Kilcoole on Thursday 13^th October, in the first round of the Bank of Ireland Leinster Cup. The lads battled well and were punished for not taking their chances when the opportunities arose. Josh Shiel gave us the lead from a Kyle Turner corner, Kilcoole levelled on the stroke of half-time, they themselves scored from a corner early in the second half after a goalmouth scramble, CBS had chances to equalise but couldn’t find the net and Kilcoole killed the game off late with their third goal.

GOAL Jersey Day

Wexford CBS participated in GOAL'S Jersey Day fundraising event on Friday 14th Oct. Students and staff contributed 2Euro to wear their favourite club colours. This year the focus is on Gambella in Ethopia, where GOAL is leading a lifesaving nutrition programme to ease malnutrition particularly among children. We hope our support helps in some way.

Basketball

The under 16 and senior basketball teams travelled to Bridgetown recently. It was a day of mixed success with the u-16 being narrowly beaten 18-13,while the u-19 had a very impressive win 35-15. Lorcan Brennan led the scoring for the u-16 with 5 points including one 3pointer. Denis Misculescu led the scoring with 10points,while his brother Angelo chipped in with another 8points and provided many assists to his brother. Both played some great defence and were aided immensely at that end by the rest of the team in particular Zygimantas Sniezka. Both teams now face St.Peters in a town Derby on Friday the 14th October.

Junior Rugby

Our Junior rugby team are currently in the middle of their league campaign. To date they have played Tullow Community School, Good Counsel, New Ross and New Ross C.B.S.. We have lost , drawn and won those games respectively. The squad are working hard in training and the team is evolving nicely in time for the Cup. It is great to see players that are new to the game do so well and develop their skills as well as enjoying the experience.

Wexford CBS receives Cycle Against Suicide Ambassador School Award – 

On Friday last, September 23rd, the now annual Cycle Against Suicide Ambassador School Awards ceremony was held at the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham. These awards recognised the immense efforts of 83 schools around the island of Ireland who have completed the Ambassador School Programme, and become actively involved in mental health promotion. The Ambassador School Programme, one aspect of a wide range of Cycle Against Suicide initiatives, is school-led, and involves the completion of “Five Gears” over the course of a year, all of which are aimed at raising awareness of the message that “It’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help”.
At a special reception held at The Royal Hospital, Kilmainham,  our school was awarded the prestigious status of Ambassador School by Cycle Against Suicide in recognition of its fulfilment of the Five Gears, and its exceptional commitment to the promotion of positive mental health.
Wexford CBS was represented at the event by Link Teacher, Ms. Ivers and students , Kyle Long , Ultan Ryan and Patrick Hobbs who understandably are very proud of their achievements. “The Ambassador School Awards ceremony was a great day. It’s wonderful to attend such a positive event, and have the efforts of the students recognised. Our participation in the Ambassador School Programme has had an enormously positive impact on our school community, fostered a school-wide approach to the promotion of positive mental health, and provided incredible opportunities for student leadership”, said Ms. Ivers speaking at the event. Representatives from the main education bodies and trusts, the Institute of Guidance Counsellors and the Ombudsman for Children, Niall Muldoon, all attended to celebrate the remarkable achievements of the schools involved.
The Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton TD, congratulated the schools which completed the Ambassador School Programme. The Minister said: "It is fantastic to see that 83 schools around the island of Ireland have completed the Ambassador School Programme, and become actively involved in mental health promotion. This is a hugely important issue that affects so many families. I strongly support the promotion of positive mental health awareness in both primary and post-primary schools.”
Founder of Cycle Against Suicide, Jim Breen, who has recently been appointed to Minister Helen McEntee’s new Taskforce on Youth Mental Health said, “On behalf of Cycle Against Suicide I’d like to thank each of the 83 Ambassador Schools for their extraordinary commitment to breaking the cycle of suicide on the island of Ireland. Each of them has gone the extra mile to raise awareness of our message, empowering themselves and others to build resilience, and seek help when necessary. The efforts of these school communities, teachers, students and parents, is changing the mind-set, behaviour and culture of an entire generation.”
The leading charity was founded by Breen in 2012 after his appearance on RTÉ’s “The Secret Millionaire”. Each year the Movement engages with individuals, schools and communities through a variety of initiatives such as the Schools’ Programmes, the 14-day main Cycle around the island of Ireland, a SpinOff series of locally organised cycles, and Events Against Suicide, a dynamic week long programme of events which runs each September to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Week. School Mass

Our school community celebrated the start of year mass in Bride Street on Tuesday last. It was a beautiful ceremony which celebrated all that is good in our school. Fr. James Cullen , our chaplin prayed for a successful school year, welcomed our new first years and also included our past pupils as they make their way in the world of work and further education.

The battle of the CBSs saw the Enniscorthy version come out comfortably on top at the end but not before after a stern challenge from their Wexford town rivals. It was 1-10 to 0-6 at half-time as dogged resistance from the Bokerboys kept them in the game.

However, this eventually faded as the second half went on and Enniscorthy struck for a late goal to put daylight between the teams.

Points from Glen Murphy Butler (free), Lee Hore and Dan Browne had CBS trailing by 1-4 to 0-3 at the end of the first quarter and CBS were unfortunate to lose two members of their half-back line Paul Leonard and Emmett Nolan to injury around this time.

It was a brave battling performance with exceptional displays from Richie Lawlor, Josh Shiel, Glen Murphy Butler and Josh McMahon. Next up is the final group game v FCJ Bunclody.

CBS lost the toss and had to play into the strong wind in the first half. Things were tight at the star but Gorey eventually began to pull away and were 1-4 to -1 ahead after 10 minutes.
However, CBS clawed their way back into the game through Glen Murphy Butler pointed frees but the concession of two soft goals towards the end of the half were killer blows as the HT score was 3-9 to 0-5.
CBS continued to battle and were rewarded when Glen Murphy-Butler’s free went all the way to the net after 46 minutes but Gorey were the better side and ran out comfortable winners at the end.
CBS have games remaining v Enniscorthy CBS and FCJ Bunclody.

CBS emerged from a tough battle with Bridgetown VC with both points. Played at a blustery Pairc Charman, it wasn’t until the final minute when Philip Rawson’s long range shot went all the way to the net that the game was resolved.
CBS started slowly but built up a nice 0-5 to 0-1 lead after 20 minutes thanks to five points (4f) from the very sharp Glen Murphy Butler. However a defensive lapse allowed Bridgetown in for a neat goal and at half-time there was just a point between the sides (0-7 to 1-3).
The Bokerboys dominated the third quarter with points from Conor Graydon, Murphy Butler, Philip Rawson and Jack O’Leary and moved into an 0-11 to 1-4 lead.
To be fair Bridgetown wouldn’t give up and kept on CBS’s tails right until the end when Rawson’s shot dropped short and deceived the keeper to put daylight between the sides in the 61^st minute.
Next up for CBS is an away game v Ramsgrange CS, where a victory would ensure top of the group and a place in the South Leinster semi-final.

CAS Student Leader

The annual Cycle Against Suicide Student Leader Ambassadors’ Retreat took place in Kippure Estate, Co. Wicklow on Thursday and Friday, August 18^th and 19^th last. 

The Retreat, now in its third year, recognises students for their exceptional contribution to the area of mental health. The aim of the Student Leader Ambassador Programme is to harness the immense leadership potential of these young adults, and empower them to bring the Cycle Against Suicide message, “It’s OK not to feel OK; and it’s absolutely OK to ask for help”, back to their schools and communities. The Student Leaders actively participate in all Cycle Against Suicide activities throughout the year.

Among the group of exceptional students, nominated by their schools and selected from hundreds of applicants, was Patrick Dobbs of CBS, Wexford. Patrick and his fellow Student Leader Ambassadors from all over the island of Ireland gathered to participate in the wide range of workshops, including Media Skills, Outdoor Pursuits, Team Building, Presentation Skills and Leadership Training. 

As well as participating in workshops and presentations, students also collaborated to develop a theme for this year's Student Leaders' Congress, which will take place in University of Limerick on January 19^th, 2017. 

Link Teacher Ruth Ivers said, 'It is a huge honour for CBS Wexford to have a student selected for such a prestigious and worthwhile programme at a national level. We are immensely proud of Patrick’s achievement’.

Transition year students had a very enjoyable day of outdoor activity in Shielbaggan Outdoor Centre recently. They got to explore caves, coast steer and climb.

Welcome Back

Welcome back to school to all our 600 pupils and 60 staff members. A particular warm welcome to all our new First Year students who will be divided into four class groups named after 1916 leaders, Pearse, Connolly, McDonagh and Brennan.
The school has relocated to the a new temporary school situated on the playing field at the rear of the original school. This is home for now until the new school is completed.
