New York Visit

Yesterday the group headed down to Manhattan to visit the many wonderful sights including the fabulous Museum Of Natural History, Times Square and to dine in Connoly's on 47th Street. A trip on the Circle Line around Manhattan showed them New York at it's finest. They also visited the NYSE and don't they scrubbed up well in their No.1's. Leinster Champion Multi-Events

Congratulations to David McDonald, 2nd year, who won the Leinster Junior Multi-Event championship in Athlone on Wednesday last. This consisted of participating in five events. David won the Long Jump, 60m Hurdles and 200m. He came second in the 800m and third in the shot. His combined score gave him a winning margin for 300 points more than his closest rival. He now goes to the All-Irelands to represent Leinster.

New York Bound

Today a group of  8 students accompanied by Mrs. Hayes, Mrs. Breen and Mr. McMahon headed to New York to begin an exchange with Iona Prep, New Rochelle. This is the fourth year of the exchange , our pupils will stay with host families and attend classes all week, as well as get the opportunity to see and explore New York City. Our Iona friends will return to Wexford in April.

U.15 Soccer

Wexford CBS starting eleven(4-4-2): Adam Dempsey, Paddy O’Reilly, Liam Godkin, Sam O’Neill, Ben Butler, Dylan O’Regan, Cathal Kirwan, Dion Murphy(C), Leon Nolan, Luke Dowdall, Ryan Busher. Subs; Justin Butler, Dylan Breen, Ben Creane, TJ Cousins, Cian Foley.

The first half was a cagey affair, Enniscorthy defended well as the CBS tried in vain to break the deadlock. Leon Nolan produced a fine save from Enniscorthy’s keeper after a clever Dylan O’Regan cross from the left. Adam Dempsey was rarely troubled in Wexford’s goal, on the occasional Enniscorthy attack he acquitted himself impressively. Half-Time 0:0

The second half continued where the first half had finished with Wexford probing for the opening goal. Approaching the last 15 minutes the sides were still deadlocked. CBS Sub: TJ Cousins for Leon Nolan. Wexford’s mid-field duo of Dion Murphy and Sam O’Neill impressed at every opportunity. Sam produced a fine save from the Enniscorthy keeper from all of 20 yards. Liam Godkin neatly feed Luke Dowdall, Luke was fouled on the edge of the box. Dylan O’Regan’s free-kick was spilled by the keeper and TJ Cousins was on hand to poke home the opener. WX CBS 1-0 EVC.                         Another quick strike from TJ gave CBS a 2-0 advantage. Wexford continued their dominance, Luke Dowdall adding to the score, nicely finishing to the keeper’s right CBS 3-0 EVC.

Enniscorthy pushed forward with time against them, determined to register on the scoreboard. They left empty handed as the game ended Wx CBS 3-0 EVC, Enniscorthy’s performance merited more but Wexford’s attacking power eventually shown through late in the game.

Senior Rugby v Good Counsel, New Ross

Another fine performance by the SCT's yesterday as they accounted for Good Counsel, New Ross. Welcome back to Conor Fenlon, who was on Leinster Youth duty for the last few weeks, and congratulations to Callum Murphy who made his Senior debut yesterday.
Next week we travel to Waterford to play Waterpark in another warm up game, as we prepare for the league playoffs and our McMullen Cup campaign.

Under 17 Soccer

Wexford C.B.S....1  Bridgetown....0

On Friday 11^th of October Wexford CBS began their under 17 league campaign with a hard fought win away to Bridgetown. The Boker boys played some lovely football but found it very difficult to break down a determined Bridgetown side.

The game began brightly and the CBS knew they were not going to have it easy as Bridgetown hassled and harried and made it very difficult for the boys to find any rhythm. Early in the game Shane McGrath was forced into action and dealt well with a Bridgetown attack. The CBS were playing some lovely football and enjoyed the lion’s share of possession but found it difficult to create a good goal scoring opportunity. Jessie Farrell and Dylan Dixon were working well together up front and forced the excellent Bridgetown keeper into a number of fine saves. The breakthrough arrived around half way through the first half as Darragh Rossiter split the defence with a delightful through ball over the top onto the foot of the onrushing Dixon who controlled well before slotting home from just inside the box for what proved to be the games only goal.

The second half saw more of the same as Bridgetown defended deep and made it very difficult for the CBS to grab a second goal. The CBS dominated possession and to be fair defended very well when Bridgetown broke forward but could not find a way past a very determined backline and an excellent keeper in the Bridgetown goal. CBS took all three points and in a three team group that will be vital, next up is a home clash with Gorey C.S znd the Bokerboys will have to improve in front of goal to get a result there, having said that the CBS put in an impressive performance and on another day could have scored more had it not been for a resolute defence. Best on the day for the lads were Alex Bergin, Eoin Doyle and Darragh Rossiter.

On Wednesday 9^th of October the Senior Wexford CBS soccer side got their league campaign underway in emphatic fashion with a big win over Enniscorthy V.C. This is almost a completely new side for the Bokerboys with the majority of last year’s side having left the school. This side has shown an excellent attitude so far and there is a great atmosphere within the team at the minute as illustrated by the huge turnout seen at training every week. Captained by Evan Dubar this team is really showing a great team spirit. Hopefully this attitude will remain throughout the season.

The match got off to a dream start for the boker boys as within 5 minutes Sean Stafford won possession in the Enniscorthy half and played in Eoghan Whitty with a neat pass and Eoghan made no mistake as he curled a cool finish in off the post to give the boys a dream start. The CBS absolutely dominated the remainder of the first half, Sean Stafford was taken down in the box and the teams’ youngest member Eoin Doyle calmly slotted home the resultant penalty. Eoin scored his second and the sides third soon after as the ball broke down from a corner 3-0. Wexford continued to create a number of chances and Sean Stafford went close to furthering the lead on quite a number of occasions (4 or 5). A fourth goal soon arrived as Richie Kearney fired home a freekick from just outside the box in off the underside of the crossbar, a goal David Beckham would have been proud of. Just before half time Sean Stafford eventually managed to hit the net to make it 5, with a well taken goal from close range.

The second half saw a number of changes from both sides as the sting left the game a little, substitute Mark Doyle made it 6-0 as he nodded home from close range after Eoghan Whitty whipped in a dangerous ball from just outside the box. Enniscorthy gave themselves a glimmer of hope as they took advantage of two mistakes at the back from Wexford CBS as ‘Sharky’ raced into two one on one positions and finished well on both occasions. Wexford CBS responded by putting real pressure on the Enniscorthy side, this topsy turvy second half soon saw its most bizarre goal as CBS keeper Joe Coleman launched a ball forward only to see it skin off the back of an Enniscorthy head and bounce over the keeper and into the net, 7-2. Some excellent work from Jessie Farrell widened the advantage as he twisted and turned in the box before squaring to Shane McGrath who made no mistake from close range. The CBS were again dominating and were guilty of missing some very good opportunities (Dylan Dixon). Enniscorthy hit back twice more coming to the end another good run from midfield as the CBS attempted an unsuccessful offside trap and a rebound from a well taken free to bring the score to 8-4 in a very entertaining second half. With ten minutes to go, the CBS introduced Keith Harpur, making his school debut and it was one to remember, Richie Kearney was taken down in the box and Keith stepped up to fire home the resulting penalty, 9-4, to  rapturous applause from the home crowd. He wasn’t finished there as he slotted home another fine finish just before the final whistle 10-4!

CBS were very impressive especially in the first half before making so many changes, next up is a tough trip to Gorey. Best on the day were Kearney, Evan Dunbar and Eoghan Whitty.

Gaelic Football - Keevans Cup First Year Football Shield

Wexford CBS retained the Keevans Cup First Year Football Shield recently at a sunny Pairc Garman with a comfortable win over St Peter’s College in the final having gone undefeated at the day-long blitz.

Their first group game saw CBS face Enniscorthy VC. After absorbing some early pressure CBS struck back with some well taken scores to lead at half time. In the second half playing with the wind they ran out comfortable winners on a score line of 4-1 to 0-2.

Scorers - Dylan Jones 2-0, James Crean 1-0, Todd Hynes 1-0, Cian Foley 0-1.

Next up were Good Counsel College of New Ross. In what was a hard fought game the final score line of 4-4 to 1-1 didn't do justice to the efforts of the New Ross lads. However the result ensured that the Boker boys were on full points after two games.

CBS’s traditional rivals St Peter’s College were next up and in a nervous encounter, both sides struggled to find their rhythm. Leading by three points with time almost up, a last minute penalty was finished to the net by the College and the game ended 1-5 each with both remaining unbeaten.

In the final group game Wexford CBS faced Enniscorthy CBS to ensure their spot in the Shield final. The first half was very closely fought before the Wexford subs secured the scores that saw them qualify on a final score line of 3-8 to 1-3.

The final saw both unbeaten teams, Wexford CBS and St Peter’s College, face one another again after their earlier draw. However this time the CBS were not to be denied running out comfortable winners by 1-4 to 0-0.

Well done to all 24 panel members, each of whom got an equal amount of game time and all contributed to the successful campaign. If this group continues to show the same attitude and commitment then the future of football in the CBS is bright.

Wexford managed to hold off a determined Bagnalstown team as they fought back, having trailed by 21 points mid way through the second half.
The Bokerboys opened strongly and were on the scoreboard when Aaron Carley picked from the No.8 position and powered through to score by the posts. Kevin Corrigan added the extra points. On 15 minutes Michael Lawlor also finished off a strong run to extend the Wexford lead to 12-0.
Bagnalstown bounced back on the resumption of play , closing the gap to six points. Kody Murphy then ran in a try and it was quickly followed by a second from Michael Lawlor. Kevin Corrigan added the conversions, and Wexford looked home and dry at 26-5.
Following numerous changes to the line up, Bagnalstown got some momentum going and finished with three late tries, having the final conversion to tie the game.
Wexford now advance to the Q-Finals of the Cup.

Business Studies Awards

Well done to Dillon Broaders, Eoin O'Shea, Daniel Lynch, Adam Carroll and Patryk Dluzynski who were commended for achieveing grade A in their Junior Cert. Business Studies at Higher Level. The lads were part of an elete group in the South East Region.They were each presented with a certificate and a trophy for the school.

Today the trawler went to sea again. Another fine catch. It is a long season and we are all safely ashore until next week. Congratulations to Donal Moore who made his senior debut today and welcome back to David Kavanagh from injury.

Rugby - Leinster Representatives.

Congratulations to Conor Fenlon from our Senior rugby squad who was capped for Leinster Youths v Munster in Donnybrook on Saturday last. They won the game and now play Ulster away and Connacht at home in their bid to retain the trophy.
Well done also to Collie Joyce-Ahearne who represented Leinster U.19's recently v Irish Exiles, Italy, Northampton, Munster, Connacht and Ulster.

Leinster Senior Qualifying: Charlesland G.C.

                   On our return to this level of competition ,the mostly young team of  third years Alex Brady (5) and Jack McGarry(6) from Rosslare G.C. and sixth year Brad Cohen  from Wexford G.C.were selected to play for the CBS.

                                The format for the event was Strokes with all competitors playing off Scratch(0) and all three scores to count. The day was mostly fine and the venue was Charlesland G.C Greystones an Eddie Hackett designed  parkland course built in 1992 which measures 6,700 yards off the blue tees but on the day we were playing off the slightly shorter white tees (6,500 yards). Tha course was firm and fairly open and  was playing quite short.

                                 Alex off  5 teed off first. After a steady front 9 of 3 over he had a couple of double-bogeys ,but recovered strongly to finish birdie-par.His 10 over total was a creditable effort for a first-time outing on a new course.

                                  Brad off 6 was second out. He had an excellent level par front 9 but the 13th was unlucky for him when a bad lie in the greenside bunker at the long par 3 resulted in a double-bogey 5. He bounced back immediately with an incredible birdie on the tough index 1 14th and a chip-in birdie at the last  gave him an excellent 2 over par 74 finish.

                                 Jack off 6 went out last. His front nine was the picture of steadiness unlil the 9th where visits to the rough, the water and a bunker resulted in a dreaded double-bogey. On the back nine he recovered brilliantly with birdies on 12 and 13 and a steady finish gave him an excellent 4 over  76 total.

                                               These three scores added gave us a 16 over 232 total,which, in the context of the range of 

scores on the day(224 to 288), was a top class performance.

                   St. Gerards,Bray 224 and Gorey C.S. 225 were the qualifiers on the day while we were in a commendable fifth place from 21 competing schools.

Rugby

This year we have entered our Senior and Junior teams in the Leinster League. We play Gorey C.S at home, travel to Templeogue to play St. Mac Dara's and finish our group games v Athy at home in Wexford.

The top team in each of the four groups throughout Leinster will qualify for the Semi-Finals.

Today we played our first fixtures of the new year. The Seniors got off to a great start with a victory over Gorey. Great display from Evan Dunbar in the second row, also well done to Dale Murphy-Butler, Steve Cullen, Chris Vickery and Jason Guerrine, who all made their senior debuts today.

A striking new kit was unveiled today for the Seniors. Many thanks to our new sponsors Renewables Academy.

A very young Junior squad came second to a strong Gorey side.Philip Rawson, Mihai Poptile, Chihun Lee, Kevin Corrigan and Leon Brennan all aquitted themselves very well in the purple and gold, Ms. Hennerberry made her debut, assiting with the coach.  A trip to Dublin is next for both sides to compete with Mac Dara's in Round 2 of the League.

Our JCT have drawn St. Kevin's, Dunlavin in the First Round of the Development Cup. Game to be played on Monday 7th October.
