First/Second Year Rugby

Well done to our First/Second Year rugby team who defeated New Ross CBS at Park Lane on Friday last. It was a comprehensive display, with great perfomances from this newly formed squad of players. They will be next years Junior team and compete in both Cup and League competitions. On the day Shane McGuinness, Daniel Bent, Josh McMahon were outstanding in the backs, while Jack Abrams, Jack Freeman, Eoin Foley and Darragh Byrne were all to the fore in the pack.

On Tuesday 15th March we played Good Counsel, New Ross. Another fine performance, with outstanding displays from Eoin McBride, Morgan Laurence, Elliot Byrne and Ruairi Fenlon.

History was made as Wexford CBS played their first championship game in the club grounds of St. Mary’s Maudlintown at the Rocks and they were made work every bit of the way to secure the win by a very determined Bridgetown side.

It was the visitors who took a firm control of the game and stormed into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead after 25 minutes with two pointed frees, a converted ’65 and two from play. All CBS could muster was a pointed free from Glen Murphy-Butler as all over the field the home side were outmuscled and outworked.

However, CBS got a welcome break when they grabbed two quick goals just before the break from a rocket of a ground shot by Adam Feery and Ruairi Fenlon also found the net.

So Wexford CBS retired with a 2-1 to 0-5 half-time lead which they hardly deserved. The third quarter was edgy as each side exchanged points so that it was 2-5 to 0-8 entering the last 15 minutes. In the 47^th minute, Josh Shiel’s long distance shot deceived the Bridgetown keeper and ended up in the net and this seemed to break their resistance.

Glen Murphy-Butler stepped up and slotted four points in a row including a beautiful strike from a side-line ball to leave CBS winners by 11 points.
CBS finish top of the group and have earned a home quarter-final to be played after the Easter holidays.

WEXFORD CBS enjoyed a hard earned 11 point victory over Carnew to set themselves up to top the group. The game was ruined as a spectacle by the gale force wind which was also icy and made conditions uncomfortable for the players.

CBS lost the toss and were forced to play into the gale in the first half. The home side took the lead with an early point and doubled their advantage in the tenth minute with a converted free.

Incredibly this was to be their final score as a determined CBS defence totally shut them out and any time they got through, goalkeeper Darragh Kehoe proved equal to their efforts as he kept a clean sheet.

Eventually CBS got on the scoreboard through a Glen Murphy-Butler free and Reece Murphy levelled after good work by Adam Feery. The vital goal arrived when Eoin Kavanagh was on hand to lash the ball to the net.

Slowly, CBS began to exert their influence even into the wind and went further ahead when Adam Feery stinging ground shot went over the bar, Eoin Kavanagh added a point to his goal and Glen Murphy-Butler directed a free over the bar.

This left the half-time score at 1-5 to 0-2 and CBS had the wind to look forward to. However, it was crucially important that they maintained their excellent work rate in the new half.

It was more of the same in the second half as both sides thundering into each other. The next few score were crucial and they went to the away side as Emmett Nolan and two from Glen Murphy Butler stretched the lead to 1-8 to 0-2.

Emmett Nolan and Paul Leonard finished the game with points to seal the victory as CBS also struck a large number of wides.

Man of the match was split between Darragh Kehoe and Josh Shiel who was given a man marking job on Carnew’s danger man and did a superb job. However, credit goes to the group for a massive effort and a massive win. Next up is a home game v Bridgetown VC.

TY Farm Visit

Mrs. Scallans Ag. Science module visited three different farms recently and returned to school full of the joys of farming and a lot wiser. Special thanks to Barry's tillage and sheep farm, Scanlon's beef farm and Murphy's Dairy Farm. A great experience was enjoyed by all.

Fifth Year Geography Trip

Miss Ivers took her Fifth Year geography to Kilkenny last week to visit Dunmore Cave and revel in the geography features.

U.17 Soccer - Leinster Final

Unfortunately CBS came up against a very strong from Lucan yesterday in their Leinster Final, trailing 1-0 until the final minutes when we grabbed an equaliser, it looked like extra time was on the cards, but a goal in added time, clenched the title for the Dublin team, leaving Wexford down and out.

First Year Soccer

First Year soccer team travelled to Greystones on Wednesday last to play Kilcoole in the Wexford/Wicklow League Semi-Final. Following a very close encounter, they came up short, losing 3-2. Goals from Eoin Kavanagh and Eoin Foley.

Senior Rugby

Our Senior Rugby team played Good Counsel, New Ross in the Leinster Shield last Tuesday but following an excellent second half, they were unable to recoup the damage conceded in the first 40 mins., losing 22-5.

Cycling Club

Our first outing was last Friday, weather conditions were not great but nonetheless a very enjoyable 40k cycle took place. Hopefully every Friday we will depart from school at 3.30pm. So get on yer bike lads.

First Year Tour

U.15 Soccer Champions

Wexford CBS 2-1 Colaiste Chill Mhantain Wicklow.

Our U-15 team produced an impressive team display recently to successfully defend their U-15 Wicklow Wexford League title. A confident defensive performance gave the boys the platform to pull away with two second half strikes from Ciaran Carthy, our back four of Cian Foley, Reece Murphy, Liam Godkin and Robert Molloy Nolan dominated throughout. Goalkeeper Eoin Kinsella was rarely troubled but marshalled his backline impressively. Midfielders Gary Hall Roche, Josh Murphy, Joey Jackson and Adam Feery battled well against early CCM pressure and as the game progressed they began to create numerous chances for forward pairing Ciaran Carthy and Eoin Kavanagh. Ciaran’s first strike was a superb 25 yard bullet that the CCM goalkeeper could only admire as it hit the Wicklow net. For his second, he produced a tidy finish after a long pass forward evaded the Wicklow defence. A last minute deflected clearance gave Wicklow their consolation goal. An impressive campaign for our boys culminated with Captain Cian Foley lifting the Wicklow Wexford U-15 Perpetual Trophy.

Cycle Against Suicide Ceile

First Year Tour To Brussels and Cologne

A group of First Year students left for Belgium today on an educational tour. They will visit the Technopolis Interactive Museum and the European Parliament in Brussels, then move on to Germany to visit the Leverkusen Stadium and also immerse themselves in the Lindt Chocolate Factory. They will also explore the Battlefields of Flanders before returning home on Saturday.

Céilí Against Suicide Wexford

Pupils of Wexford were afforded a unique opportunity to attend a special Céilí Mór in aid of Cycle Against Suicide, on Wednesday, February 10^th, 2016 in St Joseph’s Community Hall, Wexford, to promote positive mental health in schools and communities across the island of Ireland.

The schools, many of which have been have been active supporters of the Cycle Against Suicide organisation since it’s initiation a few years ago, included Coláiste Éamonn Rís, St Peter’s College, Loreto Secondary School, Selskar College, Presentation Secondary School and FCJ Secondary School, Bunclody.

The Céilí Against Sucide, which brought together over 600 students, was aptly themed ‘Together we can’ (a theme selected by Cycle Against Suicide Student Leaders) and sought to remind students, that it’s ok not to feel ok; and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help.   

This inaugural Céilí Against Suicide Wexford organised by Coláiste Éamonn Rís highlighted the team effort and collective collaboration made by the students and staff of a wide range of Wexford schools. Together Wexford Can help break the cycle of suicide on the island of Ireland.

Cycle Against Suicide is an initiative started by Irish entrepreneur, Jim Breen, as a result of his appearance on RTE’s The Secret Millionaire programme. The main objective of the Cycle is to raise awareness of the considerable help and supports that are available for anyone battling depression, self harm, at risk of suicide or those bereaved by suicide. The power of the Cycle and its message is something which each year brings communities, organisations, schools, individuals and cyclists of all abilities together with a common purpose. Each year it aims to engage more communities to begin a conversation about mental health; about looking after ourselves and reaching out to each other.

By getting on a bike and joining the “sea of orange”, YOU are helping to make a difference! Please check out our Route for 2016 and join us shoulder to shoulder as we break the cycle of suicide together and continue to spread the message that “It’s ok not to feel ok; and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help.”

Wexford win 4-3 on penalties

Wexford CBS were crowned champions of the Wicklow/Wexford FAI Schools league last week after an exciting finale in Arklow. In a pulsating game of excellent quality CBS took the honours after a thrilling penalty shoot-out.

Pres Bray took the initiative early on as they played a high tempo game looking to put the CBS under pressure with a direct approach. CBS weathered the early storm and soon found their tempo. The Bokerboys retained possession well and Jamie Thomas and Luke O’Neill on the wings began to exploit their opponents defence, the wingers ran at their opponents with confidence causing havoc Luke O’Neill beat two players on the right hand side before being taken down after 15 minutes. Jamie Thomas whipped in a dangerous free which Ryan Busher met at the back post but saw his effort rebound off the post, thankfully the ball landed at the feet of Sam O’Neill who tapped home to give the CBS the lead. Within 5 minutes Pres Bray had equalised, following a free kick on the half way line which they put straight into the box a defensive mux up left their number 10 unmarked and he took full advantage heading home to level the scores. In a frenetic period in the half the CBS took the lead again 5 minutes later, Dion Murphy broke with the ball from right back surging forward before playing a neat one two with striker Ryan Busher who laid a delightful pass into his path and from 20 yards Murphy hit a ferocious volley to the net leaving the keeper with no chance. 2-1 to the CBS. For the remainder of the first half the CBS continued to enjoy the better of proceedings with the midfield trio of Sam O’Neill, Paddy O’Reilly and Shane Hall dictating the play, the CBS perhaps should have used their advantage to add another and came close to doubling their advantage with Luke O’Neill firing one just over the bar on the stroke of half time.

The second half saw a resumption of a top quality affair with both teams playing superb football. Ten minutes in the Bokerboys thought they had finally found their 3^rd goal after another fine delivery from Jamie Thomas the Bray keeper spilled the ball into the path of Sam O’Neill who again tapped home only to see the ref rule it out for a dubious foul in the keeper. As the game wore on Pres Bray threw everything they had forward in search of an equaliser but the CBS were handling them well restricting them to long range efforts. With ten minutes remaining however one of those long range efforts was just too good to stop as the left back from Pres Bray fired home a stunning 20 yard strike to level the scores. CBS to their credit responded well with TJ Cousins forcing the keeper into an outstanding save to keep the scores level. The CBS made some effective changes Cathal Kirwan in particular swung the midfield battle Wexford’s way, and Todd Hynes added renewed energy at left back replacing the excellent Ben Butler. Hynes almost snuck a winner in stoppage time with a free kick. In extra-time the pace of the game began to take its toll, but still both sides pushed to find an equaliser. Pres Bray were becoming increasingly frustrated as the central defensive pairing of Kallum Broaders and Jack O’Leary simply wouldn’t allow an opening. Broaders was immense and started a number of dangerous counter-attacks. The tireless running and work of Jamie Thomas and Luke O’Neill continued to cause Bray a headache with O’Neill being dragged to the ground on 3 occasions in dangerous territory, the Bokerboys almost capitalised on this each time with Hynes and Thomas delivering excellent crosses. Jack O’Leary almost capitalised in the dying minutes but saw his header go narrowly wide.

The ref blew full time and the game went to the dreaded penalty shootout. Man of the occasion and team captain Adam Dempsey was immense saving 3 penalties and scoring one himself, Todd Hynes, TJ Cousins and eventually man of the match Kallume Broaders converted for the CBS to lift the trophy after a thoroughly exciting game worthy of such a final.

It has been a remarkable season so far for this team, victory in the league sees them qualify for the quarter final of the Leinster Champions league where all Leinster league winners conjugate. They are also currently in the quarter final of the Leinster cup where they will play De La Salle Dundalk on Monday 1^st February having defeated Tullow C.S, Borris, and St.Kierans College Kilkenny amongst others en route. Our under 15 side will face Colaiste Cill Mhaintain in the final of the Wicklow Wexford final later this week hoping to bring even more honours to the CBS soccer department.

South Leinster Cross Counrty

Well done to our Minor Team who came third place overall, taking Bronze medals at the recent Cross Country Championships in Co. Loais. Conor Keane, Sean White, Nathan Murphy, Darragh Collins, Oisin Waters and Pierce McDonnell. They now compete in the Leinster Finals in Santry, Dublin next Wednesday.
