Colaiste Bhride Carnew
1-2 Wexford CBS
Our U15 soccer squad
travelled to Coolboy Sports Field on Friday 21st Oct. to take on Colaiste
Bhride Carnew in their first league fixture.
Carnew started the
game strongly and were unlucky not to take an early lead after hitting the CBS
crossbar just 5 minutes in. Wexford slowly came to terms with Carnew's early
dominance. Some positional changes helped the boys gain a foothold in the game.
Joe Barrett was unlucky not to give Wexford the lead nearing half-time. His
shot beat the on rushing goalkeeper but unfortunately the ball struck the
outside of Carnew's post and trickled wide. Dylan Fox replaced Darragh Collins
just before the interval. Half-time score 0-0.
Wexford started the second half impressively
passing the football about on the heavy surface. It wasn't long before Josh
Shiel pounced on an attempted clearance and smashed the ball to the corner of
the Carnew net for a 0-1 Wexford lead. The game flowed from end to end with
Wexford playing the better football. Ben Hynes, Conor Foley, Robert Molloy
Nolan and Liam Lahiff thwarted Carnew’s attack at every opportunity. Approaching
the last 15 minutes Carnew began to push further and further forward. Evan
Roche produced a couple of fine saves to keep them at bay but was unable to
prevent Carnew’s excellent long range strike levelling the game at 1-1. Carnew
were now in the ascendancy. Wexford's midfield of Shane O'Neill, Luke O'Rourke
and Evan Farrell needed one final push to help Wexford secure the 3 points.
Kyle Turner replaced Joe Barrett.
With the game reaching its conclusion and the scores
level, Kyle Turner broke forward from an Evan Farrell through ball. The Carnew
goalkeeper raced out to meet him and the pressure told as Kyle's shot, partially
blocked by the keeper glanced the crossbar and went for a CBS corner. Kyle took
the resulting corner and Luke O'Rourke headed home the winner, 1-2.The last few
minutes Wexford defended well and clung on for a hard fought win.
