A very useful game to keep our squad active as we prepare for our upcoming cup campaign , which opens v Tullow C.S. in Tullow on Nov.29th  While without many of the squad due to other committments, this night game under lights served as a good physical encounter. While the scoreboard shows a convincing win, it was a hard fought game, with the tries coming from Collie Joyce-Ahearne 2, Ruairi Devereux 2 Josh Healy and David Kavanagh. There were also fine performances from Tomas Barry, Ruairi Devereux, Conor Fenlon and Richie Cleary.

Juvenile Football

Wexford CBS.....9-12     Scoil Chonglais (Baltinglass)...4-06

Wexford CBS’s juvenile footballers made the long journey up to Baltinglass recently and recorded a comprehensive victory over Scoil Chonglais Baltinglass in the South Leinster ‘C’ Championship. Baltinglass started the strongest and scored three goals within the first five minutes. However, this Baltinglass dominance was short-lived and Jordan Hayes opened the CBS scoring with two fine points before striding through the Baltinglass defence to score a great goal.

The visitors were now in the ascendancy and Luke Dowdall raised the green flag again with a great fisted goal from Jack O’Leary’s long pass. Kallum Broaders added a third goal with a delightful chip over the Baltinglass goalkeeper and it was now one way traffic for the Boker Boys. Baltinglass could not contain Jordan Hayes as the St. Martin’s man kicked three superb points before Kallum Broaders scored his second goal.

A great passing move up the left wing led to a another great goal from centre-forward Luke Dowdall before Jordan Hayes cut through the Wicklow defence for a second time to add a second goal to his tally. Wexford CBS’s seventh goal of the first half was a brilliant soccer style finish into the bottom left corner of the Baltinglass goal from Cian Foley. As the whistle was blown for the break Wexford CBS were leading by 7-6 to 3-2.

Despite Wexford CBS’s overwhelming half-time lead the home side showed great spirit at the start of the second half and scored a goal and three points without reply. The Wicklow student had the majority of possession and could have had more scores on the scoreboard were it not for resolute defending by Jamie Thomas, Ben McMahon and Gary Hall-Roche.

This mini revival of Baltinglass was short-lived though as once again the Boker Boys began to dominate. Against a strong breeze the Wexford town lads notched a further three points through Jordan Hayes, Phil Rawson and Cathal Kirwan. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Jordan Hayes was once again the danger man as he was pulled down on the edge of the square and he coolly converted the resulting penalty.

Five minutes later Hayes scored his fourth goal with a great strike just before Luke Dowdall pointed from his right foot. Baltinglass did have one last goal chance just before the final whistle but their effort was heroically blocked down by Wexford captain Jack O’Leary.

Best for the CBS were Cathal Kirwan, Jamie Thomas, Jack O’Leary, Luke Dowdall, Cian Foley and Kallum Broaders and man of the match Jordan Hayes with a personal tally of 4-6.

On Thursday 7^th of November Wexford CBS came out second best after a tough encounter with reigning all-Ireland champions Gorey C.S on the school grounds. The game displayed some wonderful football from both sides in poor conditions as a strong wind had a major effect on the game, but the Bokerboys will feel that they may well have deserved more from the game.

The game began brightly and the CBS looked to take the game to the away side with Jessie Farrell and Dylan Dixon linking well up front but unable to force any real chances as Gorey were defending well. Gorey did manage to break forward against the strong wind and strike an effort off the crossbar. The game was proving to be a real battle in midfield with both sides doing what they could to get on top in the game. On 20 minutes Wexford CBS were awarded a penalty as a Gorey defender blocked a corner kick with his arm, Jessie Farrell stepped up but his penalty was well saved from Gorey’s Irish u-16 international goalkeeper. Gorey finally made the breakthrough in this tense game 5 minutes later as a well delivered free kick was met at the back post for a neat finish to put Gorey ahead. The CBS managed to level the scores within ten minutes after the move of the first half Jessie Farrell controlled a sweeping ball and found Dylan Dixon with a pass, Dixon flicked on for onrushing midfielder and Eoin MacDonald who finished well low into the far corner from the edge of the box to leave the sides level at half time.

In the second half Gorey with the wind at their backs really took the game to the home side and for the first 15 minutes were easily the better team, however they were finding chances hard to come by as the Bokerboys defended well. Jessie Farrell almost gave CBS a lead against the run of play as his long range effort clipped the top of the crossbar before going over. Ten minutes into the second half they did manage to put themselves ahead after the CBS failed to clear a cross and their number 8 managed to poke home a close range finish. CBS responded well and took the game to their opponents but the Gorey defence was in no mood to relinquish their lead. Gorey doubled their advantage midway through the second half, the CBS were complaining as they felt they deserved a free during the build-up which wasn’t given, allowing Goreys central midfielder a clear run on goal his effort was well saved by Shane McGrath, and some sloppy defending left nobody picking up Goreys left winger who scored from close range. The Bokerboys did respond well and for the last ten minutes put real pressure on the Gorey defence, Gorey were resolute and their keeper managed to pull off two exceptional saves before the final whistle. Substitutes Dylan Ennis and Gary Cullen did have an impact as the CBS got back into the game.

A very good game of football was played and on the balance of play the better side won the game, but the CBS will rue that missed penalty, at this level you cannot afford not to take chances. CBS now await the result between Gorey and Bridgetown to see if they qualify for the next stage of the competition where they should face Arklow CBS away. Best for the CBS were keeper Shane McGrath Alex Bergin and Emmett Sinnott who defended well throughout, John Hamilton in midfield and Jessie Farrell up front.

On a blustery Thursday morning, the CBS showed tremendous determination against a finely tuned Gorey side to twice come from behind quickly and earn a hard-fought but deserved 3-3 draw.

South Leinster Juvenile Football 'C' Championship

Wexford CBS.......6-04    St. Kevin’s College (Dunlavin).....0- 10

Wexford CBS juvenile footballers opened their South Leinster Championship campaign with a fine twelve point win over St Kevin’s College Dunlavin on Wednesday in Pairc Charman. Dunlavin opened the scoring after five minutes but the Boker Boys were quick to respond with a well taken goal from Ben Creane. Luke Dowdall and captain Jack O’Leary added two more points to open a four point lead over the Wicklow visitors. 

Torrential rain and a strong wind made for difficult conditions for the rest of the first half but the CBS men rose above the elements. Phil Rawson raised the green flag again for the Wexford students with a clinical finish.
Jordan Hayes broke through the Dunlavin rear-guard on two separate occasions to score two great goals. Just before the half time whistle, Phil Rawson notched another goal and Wexford CBS had built up an unassailable lead of 5-02 to 0-03.
Despite the one-sided first half Dunlavin started the stronger in the second half, scoring four points before Leon Nolan got the home side’s first score of the half with a great point from the outside of his left boot. However, the men from the Garden County now had a greater share of procession but courageous defending from Cathal Kirwan, Ben McMahon and Jamie Thomas meant no goal opportunities came their way.
After a period of sustained Dunlavin pressure which yielded a further three points, Phil Rawson continued his scoring exploits with a fine point. This point proved to inspire Wexford CBS and a great passing move down the right side of the field cumulated in a fisted goal by Leon Nolan. In the dying moments, goalkeeper Adam Howlin denied Dunlavin a goal with a top-drawer save as the CBS recorded a welcome victory.
Best for Wexford CBS were Jamie Thomas, Ben McMahon, Jack O’Leary, Adam Dempsey, Jordan Hayes and man of the match Phil Rawson.

Rugby - SCT v East Glendalough

Wexford travelled to Wicklow for this friendly encounter. It was a useful workout and helped to further the development of this side. Mikey Roche and Josh Healy scored early tries, both converted by Eoin Roche to open up an early lead. A soft try was conceded between the posts. Liam Barry finished of a quality move to extend the lead, this was also converted by Eoin Roche. EGL managed a firther try before the break to leave it 21-12 at the interval.
Gavin Byrne and Ian Moran scored tries in the second half, while we also conceded two tries. Overall in was a satisfactory display, although we did lack an acceptable level of concentration at various periods during the game for which we were punished.
We have been drawn away to Tullow CS in the McMullen Cup, a stiff challenge lies ahead.

Rugby - JCT Cup Q-Final

Wexford  C.B.S....15  Scoil Conglais ...22
Wexford got of to a great start in this game and were 7-0 up after 5 mins. Aaron Carley crashed over and Kevin Corrigan added the conversion. Following sustained Wexford pressure, the ball was stolen and the Scoil Conglais winger raced the lenght of the field to score in the corner. 7-5. This led to a purple patch for them and they added two further tries before half time. 7-15 at the break.
Five minutes into the second half Wexford were awarded a penalty , which Kevin Corrigan converted to narrow the lead. 10-15. Shortly afterwards we had conceded again and were trailing 22-10 when Adam Baziz, finally crossed the line for Wexford.
For a squad of players relatively new to the game this was a good performance.

South Leinster Senior Hurling ‘C’ Quarter-final

Wexford CBS........................4-13     Colaiste Bhride Carnew..............3-8

After a particularly tough 60 minutes of hurling against Colaiste Bhride of Carnew the seniors of Wexford CBS progressed to the semi-final of the South Leinster Senior ‘C’ championship in Pairc Charman last Tuesday. The home side led by 2-7 to 2-1 at the break after enjoying the benefit of the wind and it was a much improved second half performance which ensured the victory.
Sean Stafford opened the scoring for the CBS but they were rocked when Carnew full-forward John Fleming of Craanford rifled a 21 yard free to the net. A second point from Stafford and another from Joe Coleman levelled matters after ten minutes.

Jamie McDonnell was bundled over for Joe Coleman to convert the free before Coleman split the posts from a tight angle to push CBS 0-5 to 1-3 in front. The home side’s first goal came courtesy of Mikey Coleman’s on 18 minutes. Sean Stafford’s shot was saved by the keeper but Coleman followed up and pulled the ball to the net.

Rob Donnelly passed to Joe McBride and he lashed to the net with a neat finish to leave the score at 2-7 to 1-1 after 25 minutes but Fleming repeated his earlier feat of netting from a free before half-time to leave the situation tense for CBS at the break with just a six point lead.

Carnew had the better start to the second half and four converted frees from John Fleming put them right back in contention. However, two Joe Coleman points, one from a free, settled CBS and Rob Donnelly scored his first goal after 49 minutes as the Wexford lads began to pull away.

Nicky Lawlor did all the hard work for Sean Stafford to grab a point and Donnelly’s fourth goal seemed to knock the stuffing out of Carnew. However, they refused to let go and scored their third goal on 53 minutes but CBS had the last say when Eoin Roche, Sean Stafford (long range free) and Joe Coleman put the ball over the bar.

Next up for CBS is a home semi-final versus New Ross V.C.

Senior Soccer

On Tuesday the 16^th of October the senior soccer side of Wexford CBS came away from Gorey with a precious 3 points after an intense game. Gorey away is always going to be a tough game, and the Bokerboys will have learned a lot about themselves from this encounter.

Gorey began the game brightly and put the CBS defence under pressure from the off. The CBS coped with this with Evan Dunbar and Emmett Fox emerging as real leaders at the back. CBS began to find their feet in the game and pushed forward down the wings, left back Eoin Doyle took on two Gorey defenders before being taken down in the box but the referee judged that it was not to be a penalty. Almost straight away Gorey responded with a quick counter attack and played an excellent through ball into an onrushing centre forward who faced keeper Joe Coleman in a one on one situation with the CBS keeper bravely coming out to block the Gorey effort and keep the game scoreless. The game was proving to be a very tense affair with neither side getting a real hold of proceedings with the ball remaining around the midfield area in a real battle for possession and the upper hand. The Gorey side did manage to create a good opening after about 20 minutes but again Joe Coleman produced a great save to deny another one on one opportunity and keep the teams’ level. CBS now began to press their opponents and forced a couple of corners but were unable to test the Gorey keeper, Richie Kearney was working well as the lone striker and held up the ball well but a very solid Gorey backline were protecting their keeper well. Some fantastic football was on display as there was no real difference between the sides and it looked as if it would take a moment of magic to separate them.

That moment of magic soon arrived and the Bokerboys took the lead. Eoghan Whitty was at the heart of everything good from the CBS going forward and he played a delightful cross field pass to Richie Kearney just inside the Gorey half, Kearney caught a glimpse of the Gorey keeper standing at the edge of his box and from wide left on the field he controlled the ball well and attempted an audacious effort with his weaker left foot which hit the far top corner of the net for a truly spectacular goal. CBS looked to double their lead before the interval with Sean Stafford driving through the middle of the field before firing a well-placed effort towards the top corner of the net but saw his effort saved by a remarkable save from Gorey’s Irish international keeper. Gorey responded very well and were unlucky not to level the scores before half time as a combination of luck and resolute defending kept them at bay. Having done all the hard work their number ten managed to beat the keeper but not the crossbar at first and Emmett Fox blocked another goalbound effort on the line before the halftime whistle arrived.

Wexford began the second half in much better fashion as they looked to add another goal. Substitute Mark Doyle began very brightly and on two occasions made space for a shot but was unfortunate not to hit the target. Some excellent football was on display and both the defences were on top with very few chances being created at either end. Gorey broke well down the right wing and hit a neat cross but their attacker unfortunately couldn’t get enough on the ball and it skimmed off his head and away from danger. CBS broke from this with Lar Stoutt finding substitute Darragh Rossiter and the Bokerboys countered well but again couldn’t get a clear shot off. The CBS did add a second with about 15 minutes remaining, Gorey were at this stage pushing up in desperate search of an equaliser and leaving gaps at the back, Eoghan Whitty exploited that gap with a precise ball over the top for Sean Stafford who latched onto the pass and found himself in a one on one position from which he made no mistake in adding a second 2-0!! The Bokerboys were delighted at having deservedly added to their lead. Gorey responded almost immediately, they received a free wide on the left and swung in a dangerous ball which was met at the back post with a well-placed headed effort to make it 2-1 with ten minutes remaining. Wexford CBS upped their performance at this stage and did not allow Gorey back near their goal, after some good work down the right wing Darragh Rossiter was fouled. Up stepped Richie Kearney and from another tough angle fired in a looping effort which beat the keeper and found the top corner,almost as good as his first, 3-1 the score and the boys couldn’t hide their excitement as only extra time remained.  They almost celebrated too much as Gorey took a quick tip and only for a rash tackle from Eoin Doyle would have been in for a second goal. The CBS defended resolutely until the final whistle to take all 3 points from a very tough game. The CBS have started this season very well and yet again the attitude and workrate of the team was exemplary. Next up is a tough fixture away to Bridgetown but if the boys continue with this effort they will have no reason to be fearful. It would be very difficult to choose a player of the match from this game as it was such an excellent team performance with everyone playing their part, Joe Coleman did well to keep us in the game, the centre half pairing of Emmett Fox and Evan Dunbar were immense throughout, Eoghan Whitty created a lot for the side throughout the game, and Richie Kearney of course had a part to play with those special goals.

Happy Halloween

New York Visit

Yesterday the group headed down to Manhattan to visit the many wonderful sights including the fabulous Museum Of Natural History, Times Square and to dine in Connoly's on 47th Street. A trip on the Circle Line around Manhattan showed them New York at it's finest. They also visited the NYSE and don't they scrubbed up well in their No.1's. Happy Birthday to Jason , 'The Bronx Bomber'

Leinster Champion Multi-Events

Congratulations to David McDonald, 2nd year, who won the Leinster Junior Multi-Event championship in Athlone on Wednesday last. This consisted of participating in five events. David won the Long Jump, 60m Hurdles and 200m. He came second in the 800m and third in the shot. His combined score gave him a winning margin for 300 points more than his closest rival. He now goes to the All-Irelands to represent Leinster.

New York Bound

Today a group of  8 students accompanied by Mrs. Hayes, Mrs. Breen and Mr. McMahon headed to New York to begin an exchange with Iona Prep, New Rochelle. This is the fourth year of the exchange , our pupils will stay with host families and attend classes all week, as well as get the opportunity to see and explore New York City. Our Iona friends will return to Wexford in April.

Wexford CBS starting eleven(4-4-2): Adam Dempsey, Paddy O’Reilly, Liam Godkin, Sam O’Neill, Ben Butler, Dylan O’Regan, Cathal Kirwan, Dion Murphy(C), Leon Nolan, Luke Dowdall, Ryan Busher. Subs; Justin Butler, Dylan Breen, Ben Creane, TJ Cousins, Cian Foley.

The first half was a cagey affair, Enniscorthy defended well as the CBS tried in vain to break the deadlock. Leon Nolan produced a fine save from Enniscorthy’s keeper after a clever Dylan O’Regan cross from the left. Adam Dempsey was rarely troubled in Wexford’s goal, on the occasional Enniscorthy attack he acquitted himself impressively. Half-Time 0:0
Wexford Sub: Justin Butler for Ryan Busher.

The second half continued where the first half had finished with Wexford probing for the opening goal. Approaching the last 15 minutes the sides were still deadlocked. CBS Sub: TJ Cousins for Leon Nolan. Wexford’s mid-field duo of Dion Murphy and Sam O’Neill impressed at every opportunity. Sam produced a fine save from the Enniscorthy keeper from all of 20 yards. Liam Godkin neatly feed Luke Dowdall, Luke was fouled on the edge of the box. Dylan O’Regan’s free-kick was spilled by the keeper and TJ Cousins was on hand to poke home the opener. WX CBS 1-0 EVC.                         Another quick strike from TJ gave CBS a 2-0 advantage. Wexford continued their dominance, Luke Dowdall adding to the score, nicely finishing to the keeper’s right CBS 3-0 EVC.

Enniscorthy pushed forward with time against them, determined to register on the scoreboard. They left empty handed as the game ended Wx CBS 3-0 EVC, Enniscorthy’s performance merited more but Wexford’s attacking power eventually shown through late in the game.                          
Next up for Wx CBS, Gorey Community School.

Senior Rugby v Good Counsel, New Ross

Another fine performance by the SCT's yesterday as they accounted for Good Counsel, New Ross. Welcome back to Conor Fenlon, who was on Leinster Youth duty for the last few weeks, and congratulations to Callum Murphy who made his Senior debut yesterday.
Next week we travel to Waterford to play Waterpark in another warm up game, as we prepare for the league playoffs and our McMullen Cup campaign.
