Wexford CBS 5-6 Borris V.C (a.e.t)

Heartbreak for seniors in first round of cup after Epic comeback

The Senior soccer team enjoyed very mixed emotions within one game at the hands of Borris V.C in North End. The defending Wicklow/Wexford league champions had high hopes this year of a good competitive run in the Leinster cup, but unfortunately crashed out on the first day after a dramatic match. Missing last season’s senior player of the year Darragh Rossiter didn’t help proceedings for sure but still the Bokerboys have nobody to blame but themselves. The game began with a very cagey atmosphere as both teams got stuck in to what would be an epic contest. Borris struck first blood after they punished the CBS backline for some lacklustre defending playing a neat one-two before their number 9 beat Adam Dempsey to give them the lead. The Bokerboys response was immediate with Shane McGrath firing in a volley from 15 yards on the left side leaving the keeper with no chance. The remainder of the first half performance will not be fondly remembered by the home side who were simply nowhere near their usual level. Unable to cope with the physical but fair efforts of their counterparts the CBS were caught guilty in possession again and yet again Borris combined to find a defence splitting pass and number 9 for the away side added his and his team’s second with a fine finish. Dylan Dixon was wasteful when played in with the chance of an equaliser opting to lob the keeper unaware of time he had and his effort landed on top of the net. Borris physical prowess was winning them a lot of possession and gave the home team no time on the ball at all as their high pressure game again paid dividends dispossessing Paddy O’Reilly on the right flank before sending in a cross and doubling their advantage. The half time score 3-1 against a shell-shocked home side. Things went from bad to worse as the influential Ryan Byrne was lost to injury after receiving a blow to the head at the close of the half.

To be fair to Wexford CBS they began the 2^nd half in an entirely different manner and having made some changes and a few harsh words finally began to get into the game. However it appeared that luck deserted the side completely on the day. Aaron Goodison seeing a goal disallowed early on, Lee Busher whipped in a free kick from the right flank and the Borris keeper dived into a crowd of his own players missing the ball which found its way to the feet of Goodison who finshed well but the ref blew for a free out for a “foul” on the keeper. Shortly afterwards substitute Luke O’Neill got away from the Borris defence leaving them in his wake as he sprinted goalwards but hit his effort straight at the grateful keeper. The Bokerboys had certainly raised their game but again disaster struck, Paddy O’Reilly and the right winger for Borris got into a tangle and the result a free kick some 25  yards from goal for the away side. The same winger stepped up and unleashed an unbelievable effort into the top corner of the net leaving Adam Dempsey (or any keeper) with absolutely no chance for one of the most spectacular goals surely ever witnessed in North End’s illustrious grounds. 2 minutes later Borris broke on the counter again a nicely played cross field ball from right to left played in their left winger who rushed on and finished well 5-1 to the away side. To give credit to the CBS they did not stop or give up hope and changed formation in the hope of finding something. Substitute Sam O’Neill linked well with fellow sub Liam Rockett playing a neat one two before drilling a cross into the box which Lee Busher rattled home from close range, 5-2. The game and goals were flowing Aaron Goodison made it 5-3 with 10 minutes remaining as he volleyed home a cleared corner with a phenomenal strike from 30 yards into the top corner of the net. The Bokerboys were now completely dominating proceedings and were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box with 5 minutes to go, up stepped Shane McGrath who curled in a lovely effort to beat the opposing keeper 5-4 and game on with the clock ticking. The CBS continued to pour forward and came close again and again, another free awarded for another foul on Sam O’Neill on the left wing, McGrath stepped up again and managed again to fire home, completing an epic comeback and forcing extra time, the CBS in dreamland. That dream soon however turned to nightmare as 5 minutes into extra time and the first time Borris got out of their own half since the CBS comeback a penalty was awarded against Dion Murphy for a slightly over-exuberant tackle. Borris’ impressive right back stepped up and fired home confidently. 6-5 to Borris. The CBS came close again with super sub Liam Rockett seeing his 20 yard drive well saved by the away keeper. In the second half of extra time the CBS continued to press and felt aggrieved when not awarded a penalty for a foul from behind on Sam O’Neill after he had turned his man. Liam Rockett again came close hitting the corner flag with an effort from the edge of the box. In the dying seconds of the game the Bokerboys thought they had found a deserved equaliser after captain Jessie Farrell managed to jink in between two defenders for a clear run on goal and as he was about to pull the trigger, he was cynically taken down with a tackle from behind. Borris’s offender was shown a red card and a free awarded on the very edge of the box. Shane McGrath saw his shot blocked down and the full time whistle was blown. A devastated CBS crashed out of the cup after an incredible game, a mixture of the best and the worst from our lads and ultimately not enough. Best on the day for the Bokerboys were Shane McGrath (hat trick hero), Jessie Farrell, Aaron Goodison and super sub Liam Rockett.

The Bokerboys finish group with solid performance

Wexford CBS under 17 side rounded off the group stage of their league campaign with a 100% record to ensure passage into the semi-final of the competition. The Bokerboys started the game nervously and went behind to a well worked goal from a determined Enniscorthy side. Adam Dempsey and his defence could do nothing as a deflected cross found its way to an Enniscorthy player unmarked in the box who applied a neat finish high to Dempsey’s right hand side 1-0 to the away side. The Bokerboys response was excellent as from that point on they dominated possession and the game itself. The pace and energy of the wingers Luke O’Neill and Jamie Thomas was casuing their opponents a head ache and midway through the first half Luke O’Neill battled well in the box to claim possession of a Jamie Thomas cross and he slid an effort past the helpless keeper to level the scores. For the remainder of the half Wexford CBS played some dynamic football and created a lot of chances, but a combination of some good last ditch defending and an excellent goalkeeper couldn’t find another goal. Half time 1-1.

In the second half the home side really upped their game and within five minutes had taken the lead after Luke O’Neill combined well to play in Dion Murphy who coolly slotted home to put the Bokerboys ahead. Wexford CBS continued to apply the pressure and created more chances but just couldn’t find the finishing touch. Enniscorthy were looking dangerous on the counter but fine defending from Kallum Boraders and Jack O’Leary in particular kept them at bay. Luke O’Neill thought he had doubled the advantage midway through the second half, Kallum Broaders whipped in a dangerous ball which Luke met brilliantly on the volley smashing home into the top corner but the ref blew him offside in what had to be a close call. Substitute TJ Cousins did manage to add a third in the dying minutes as he latched onto a through ball from Dylan O’Regan advancing into a 1 on 1 with the keeper sending an effort across the keeper to find the net low to the left corner. Overall the Bokerboys coped well with the test provided by Enniscorthy and deservedly won guaranteeing themselves top spot in the group and passage directly to the semi-final of the league competition where they will hope to go one better than last year where they were defeated on penalties in the final. Best on the day from an excellent team performance were Kallum Broaders, Dion Murphy and Luke O’Neill.

Today was Cup Day, but unfortunately a victory escaped us. We led 14-13 at the interval, but conceded early tries in the second half and never recovered. This team has not achieved their potential, but with 12 of them still available next year, maybe it is a year too soon for them. Captain Chris Vickery led by example while Alex Ryan at 10 was always a torment to the opposition. Both of them scored our tries. Kean Kehoe, Ian Bennett and Jack O'Leary were best in the pack, while Calum Murphy, Nigel Donohue and Luke Dowdall stood out in the back line.
We now await the Shield draw.

Iona Visit

Today the visiting students from Iona Prep and their CBS hosts travelled to the Rock Of Cashel to see some Irish Heritage.

Leinster Schools Senior Hurling ‘B’ Championship

After a gruelling battle in terrible conditions on a sodden pitch, the senior hurlers of Wexford CBS just came up short against Abbey Community College of Ferrybank last Tuesday in Kilmacow in round two of the Leinster Schools Senior Hurling ‘B’ championship.
The home side enjoyed the strong wind advantage in the opening half and retired with a sizeable 1-6 to 0-1 lead. CBS, fresh from their round one draw with Enniscorthy CBS, competed well in the first ten minutes and could have had two points from their first two attacks but instead had wides.
At the other end, the Abbey attack wasn’t as wasteful and registered four converted frees to lead by 0-4 to nil after 14 minutes. The home side pounced for their goal on 16 minutes and added two points from play before Conor Coleman eventually got Wexford CBS on the scoreboard with a pointed free on 27 minutes.
With a deficit of eight points to overturn, CBS needed a burst of scores in the third quarter to get back in the game. They rejigged their team by moving Cormac Byrne to centre-forward and Shane Hall to full-forward for the second half.
The switches had the desired effect as CBS tore into their opponents with vigour. Liam Rockett and Cormac Byrne rifles over points and two converted frees by Conor Coleman reduced the lead to 1-6 to 0-5 after 40 minutes.
Just as CBS were building up momentum Abbey were awarded some dubious frees which were pointed to increase their lead to 1-8 to 0-5 but the Wexford students kept going at them and were rewarded with two more Conor Coleman pointed frees before the St. Martin’s attacker sent a stinging shot just over the bar in the 52^nd minute.
Again Abbey struck for a pair of points to put five points between the teams but then it was reduced back to two in the 55^th minute when Jack O’Leary flicked Dylan Dixon’s shot past the Abbey keeper.
Try as they might for the remainder the CBS lads couldn’t get the scores to earn the victory and returned home empty handed. Next up is a must win home game versus Gorey CS in round 3.

Iona Friends

A warm welcome to our friends from Iona Prep who arrived in school today. 8 pupils and 3 staff members have made the trip and will spend four days in our company. During which time they will experience life in Wexford CBS as well as participate in some day trips. Our students will make the return trip to New Rochelle next April.

Wexford continued their warm up for the McMullen Cup with a game against Carnew VC on Friday last. It was a game that tested the Wexford defence as we had to play without the ball for most of the first half. Our defence held up to the constant barrage of attacks, only been breached on one occasion. Trailing 5-0 at the break and with the wind at our backs, it seemed that we should enjoy the  territorial advantage in the second half.
This proved to be more difficult than expected as we failed to use the elements wisely, instead we persisted with a handling game which did not meet our needs.
Our first venture into the opposing 22, led to a try from Chris Vickery. Our second and only other incursion into that part of the field led to another try , this time from full back Darragh Rossiter.
This looked to be enough, but a try in the corner in the final play led to a score which they duly converted to take the honours.
We now play Colaiste Mhaintain, Wicklow in the McMullen Cup on Wednesday next in Wexford at 1pm.

The senior hurlers picked up a precious point in the championship when they came from behind to secure a richly deserved draw versus Enniscorthy CBS. Although the Boker Boys never had the lead, they never gave up the fight and got just about what they deserved in the end.

The Enniscorthy lads raced into a 1-4 to 0-1 lead after ten minutes with the help a rocket of a goal from county minor Seamus Casey. Gradually Wexford CBS began to believe and clawed their way back into the game with pointed frees from the hurl of Conor Coleman together with one from play from Coleman after 19 minutes.

It was 1-8 to 0-4 approaching half-time when CBS got a break when the Enniscorthy keeper dropped a Conor Coleman centre to the net and the sides retired with CBS trailing by four points (1-8 to 1-4).

The defence led by Daniel Lynch, Adam Dempsey and Cormac Byrne was working overtime and needed some help from their colleagues in attack in the new half. Cathal Kirwan had entered for the unluckily injured Padraig Rossiter and was also playing well.

CBS went to work straight from the start of the new half. Liam Rockett (2), Stephen Rossiter and Cormac Byrne (with a beautiful lift and strike effort from inside his own half) had points but the visitors always managed to keep their noses in front with points of their own.

With ten minutes to go, CBS got the lead down to one point thanks to Conor Coleman converted frees and his eighth and final point tied up the game in the 59^th minute.

It was a great performance full of grit and determination. Well done to all. Next up is an away trip to Waterford to take on Abbey CC of Ferrybank.

Both our Senior and Junior teams had useful workouts against Good Counsel, New Ross on Wednesday last. The Seniors went down by a single point in a game of two halves really. Bokerboys dominated the first half with scores from Aaron Smythe, Darragh Rossiter and Callum Murphy and were well in control, but a bad decision just before half time cost seven points. The second half did not live up to the standard of the earlier exchanges and Wexford spent alot of time defending, eventually conceding scores and losing by 22-21. Further games are scheduled for after the break against Wicklow and a return fixture v God Counsel, before we begin our campaign in the McMullen Cup.
The Juniors were well beaten by a far bigger team, but it is great to have so many young new players involved. Further games will help them improve.

Wexford CBS 4-0 Enniscorthy V.C

Bokerboys begin league campaign with repeat of last seasons scoreline

It was a repeat of the scoreline from when these sides met last season in the under 17 league as the Bokerboys began their league campaign in impressive fashion. Playing in Wexford Albion Coolcotts pitch the boys who were very familiar with the surroundings looked comfortable from the beginning. Early on Luke O’Neill and Jamie Thomas posed a massive threat down both wings and O’Neill almost opened the scoring inside five minutes hitting the side netting after creating an opening for himself after running at the Enniscorthy defence. Jamie Thomas minutes later saw an effort crash off the crossbar. The Bokerboys dominated the half as they continued on from their first cup game displaying a powerful game in terms of keeping possession. The Bokerboys were looking frustrated as time and time again they were thwarted in their attempts at goal by a combination of fine goalkeeping, good defending and poorly placed shots. The Bokerboys however displayed a profeesional attitude and remained focused throughout and eventually made the breakthrough with only minutes remaining in the first half TJ Cousins forced the keeper into a fantastic save as he met Jamie Thomas’s cross with a powerful header the rebound however was picked up by Sam O’Neill who reacted first and squared a ball across the box for his brother Luke to tap in from close range. The Bokerboys doubled their advantage within minutes as Dion Murphy surged forward from right back to finish from close range after some neat play with his team mates.

2-0 the half time score after a difficult half, in which Enniscorthy gave everything in an attempt to stop the Bokerboys. The second half saw a change in style of the game as Enniscorthy looked to play directly to their attacking force Aaron Dobbs who was played into a one on one situation from which CBS captain Adam Dempsey reacted brilliantly to save and keep the clean sheet intact. The CBS continued to pile on pressure as time and time again they couldn’t quite find the finishing touch to some well-constructed attacks. The third goal arrived with ten minutes remaining, centre half Jack O’Leary met an in swinging corner gracefully with an overhead kick which hit the crossbar and Luke Dowdall tapped home from close range the rebound. The goal helped to alleviate the pressure of the away side. Dowdall added his second minutes later with a lovely effort as he controlled and volleyed from outside the box hitting the top corner of the net to make it 4-0. Another excellent team performance from the CBS as they make a winning start to this seasons league campaign hoping to go one better from last season when they lost out in the final on penalties. Man of the match on the day from several candidates was Shane Hall as he worked tirelessly for the good of the team throughout.

Bokerboys begin Cup campaign with convincing victory

Wexford CBS Under 17s began their season in convincing style with a dominant display over Tullow C.S in North End winning by a score of 6-1. The CBS simply dominated every aspect of this game from the off as the energetic team effort saw them command the lion’s share of possession. Luke O’Neill started brightly down the right flank and gave his opponent a nightmare as he looked to get in behind at every opportunity using skill to get in behind opposition lines before delivering a dangerous cross into the box. CBS from the off looked hungry for victory, and the opening goal soon arrived as Luke O’Neill got to the byline before whipping in a dangerous cross which was turned into the net by a Tullow player. The game was marred by an injury to a player off each team with both being taken to hospital immediately. CBS continued with their excellent approach and moved the ball around with real purpose in a scintillating display of possession football. The bokerboys soon doubled their lead after the O’Neill brothers combined excellently Sam threaded a ball between the opposition defence and Luke took it in his stride, waltzing between two players before coolly slotting home into the corner leaving the keeper with no chance. The level of performance of the Bokerboys was impressive as Tullow simply couldn’t make it out of their own half, the hosts playing excellently should really have added many more. Sam O’Neill made it 3-0 before the break after a fine team move played him in to the box and he applied a neat finish at the near post.

The second half saw Tullow emerge with renewed energy and for the opening put in a spell of good football where they threatened to make the CBS pay. However when they did advance they found it difficult to cope with the presence of Kallum Boraders and Peter Doyle at the back. Some good build up play won them a corner from which they headed home to bring them back into the game. The Bokerboys however responded immediately and substitute Cathal Kirwan linked up well with Sam O’Neill and Ryan Busher before bundling home a shot from inside the area. From this point on the CBS again dominated proceedings with Sam O’Neill making it 5 soon after. The Bokerboys introduce more substitutes and both Todd Hynes and Leon Nolan Cullen impressed down the wings. Dion Murphy rounded off an excellent team performance in the final minute after he advanced down the right flank before cutting inside and just inside the box unleashed an effort which found the top corner of the net. The final score was 6-1 but what was most impressive was the convincing performance of the Home side if they can maintain this level of performance it will take a very good side to overcome us. Best on the day was simply every player as they all combined so efficiently and impressively to dominate this game.

Futsal Champions

Well done to our First Year Indoor Futsal squad who were crowned County Champions yesterday. On the way to victory they beat, St. Peter's, Creagh College, New Ross CBS, New Ross VS and Enniscorthy VS . All games were won comprehensively and they now go forward to the Leinster Finals in November
