Leinster Schools Senior Hurling ‘B’ Championship

Wexford CBS v Gorey CS
Friday Nov 20 at Pairc Charman

Wexford CBS……………………….2-10 Gorey CS………………………..2-7
Wexford CBS withstood a second half onslaught from Gorey CS to collect both points in this keenly contested Leinster Schools Senior Hurling ‘B’ championship contest at Pairc Charman last Friday.
The home side enjoyed the advantage of the strong wind in the first half and needed to build up a sizeable lead in order to have any hope of winning the game.
Shane McGrath started the scoring for CBS with a neat point but at the other end Aodan Doyle levelled matters. CBS opened up a gap in the next ten minutes as Conor Coleman raced through and fired to the net and this was followed by points from the excellent Liam Rockett (2) and Chris Cowman.
Tiernan Doyle kept Gorey in touch with a point but Coleman and Rockett stretched the CBS lead to 1-6 to 0-2 approaching the 20th minute. Aodan Doyle converted a free for the Gorey students and then Tiernan Doyle gave the visitors a serious boost when he goaled in the 26th minute (1-6 to 1-3).
However, Wexford CBS got a crucial score just before the break when Conor Coleman cleverly put Dylan Dixon in the clear and Dixon planted the ball in the bottom corner of the net to leave the half-time at 2-7 to 1-3.
Gorey CS needed to get scores on the board quickly but they found the resolute CBS defence hard to break down. Aodan Doyle sweetly cut a sideline ball between the posts in the 38th minute and the added a pointed free shortly afterwards.
The Naomh Eanna attacker expertly directed the ball past Shane McGrath (who had switched into the goal at half-time) to the net in the 45th minute to leave the score at 2-7 to 2-5. CBS were playing very deep to help out their busy defence but this reduced any chance of getting scores at the other end.
Conor Coleman lifted the siege for the Bokerboys with a converted free (CBS’s only score from a placed ball) and moments later Chris Cowman’s brave catch was rewarded with a point. Gorey battled on and both Aodan Doyle and Jack Cullen popped over frees (2-9 to 2-7) but Conor Coleman had the last say when he played a shrewd one-two with Chris Cowman to increase the lead to three points.
