Wexford CBS 1-10
Enniscorthy CBS 2-4
Wexford CBS reached the quarter final of the South Leinster
“B” Junior Football Championship after a thrilling victory over Enniscorthy CBS
in Páirc Charman on Thursday last.
On a very heavy pitch, the Boker Boys were quick to settle,
but took a while to find their range.
Numerous scoring chances went a-begging before Cian Foley and Luke
Dowdall put them on the scoreboard. In a
close and competitive contest, Enniscorthy led by 3 points to 2 at half time.
Enniscorthy grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck with
2-1 in the opening minutes of the second half.
However, the Wexford side never gave in and with inspirational play,
particularly from Cathal Kirwan, Sam O’Neill, Ben McMahon, Kallum Broaders,
Chris Cowman, Adam Dempsey, Luke Dowdall (whose ball-winning ability stood
out), they gradually ate into the deficit.
Points from Dempsey (3), Cowman (1) and Dowdall (2) brought the gap down
to the minimum.
A last-minute free from Dempsey into the square was fisted to
the net by team captain Jack O’Leary to send the Wexford contingent into
raptures. Impressive substitute Aaron
Smith kicked a point to give Wexford a deserving three point win.
This is the first time for many a year that Wexford CBS have
played in the “B” grade and it is most satisfying to reach a quarter-final at
the first time of asking.
