Budget 2011 - Some Implications For Secondary Schools
Pupil/ Teacher Ratio:
With effect from the 2012/13 school year guidance provision will have to be allocated by schools from within their standard teacher allocation. At present a separate allocation is made for guidance on an ex-quota basis. Guidance provision will be now included in the general staffing allocation to a school. This measure is in effect an increase in the Pupil Teacher Ratio. This will leave principals with no option but to cut guidance provision, cut minority subjects and have larger classes.
Funding:
Overall there will be a 2% reduction in the funding for capitation and related grants to pr second level schools in each of 2012 and 2013 and a further 1% reduction in each of 2014 and 2015. A 2% cut in capitation and other grants in 2012 coming on top of a 5% reduction in 2011 means that many schools will find it impossible to make ends meet. The financial well-being of schools is even more acute when one considers increases of up to 10% in the cost of essential items such as insurance, energy and transport charges for extra and co-curricular activities.

Christmas Newsletter Part 1
Bhur gcéad fáilte go dtí nuachtitir na Nollag 2011. I would like to take this opportunity to thank staff and students for all their hard work during the course of the past year and to wish staff, students and parent(s)/guardian(s) a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. I would also like to thank the members of the Board of Management and the Parents’ Council for all their hard work on behalf of the school community in the past year.
The Board of Management
Mr. Anthony Roche has replaced Mr. Tadhg O’Corcora as a parents’ representative on the Board. The Board would like to express its thanks to Mr. O’Corcora for his contribution to Board matters over the past three years. It would also like to wish Mr. Roche well in his new role. The Board consists of eight members. Four are Trustee representatives; Mr. Gerry Forde (Chairperson), Mr. Jim Hurley, Mr. Tom Mc Loughlin and Miss Ann Walsh. Two are teacher representatives; Mr. Sean Ahearne and Mrs Colleen Hayes. Two are parent representatives; Ms. Anita Moloney and Mr. Anthony Roche. The Board has recently adopted a new Child Protection Policy (see wexfordcbs.ie).
The Parents’ Council
A new Parents’ Council committee was elected at the A.G.M. in October. The elected officers are as follows; Mrs. Abina Moore (Chairperson), Mrs Adimbola Okegbile (Secretary), Mrs Dolores Ennis (Treasurer). The Council has kindly donated €2,000 towards the cost of First and Second Year Homework Clubs. The Council also hopes to sponsor a number of Gaeltacht scholarships for summer 2012. If any parent has a concern they would like discussed or an idea that they think could be of benefit to the school community, they are welcome to attend meetings or to bring the matter to the attention of a Council member.
Literacy and Numeracy
The Department of Education and Skills has identified literacy and numeracy levels in Ireland as key areas for improvement over the next three to five years. Every primary and secondary school is expected to devise a strategy to improve literacy and numeracy levels. Initiatives to promote literacy and numeracy areas have already begun in Coláiste Éamonn Rís. It is hoped to have weekly Maths and crossword competitions up and running in the New Year. A quiet room will be available at lunchtime on a designated day for students to retreat to for a quiet read.
Parents have a very important part to play in helping their sons improve their literacy and numeracy standards and thus will be an integral part of any plan going forward. The Parents’ Council were briefed on the matter on December 6th. All parents are asked to foster reading in the home. I will revisit this topic in the New Year.
Revised Code of Behaviour
A draft copy of a revised Code of Behaviour has been produced up and will be distributed to the various partners in the school community for consideration and comment before being formally adopted by the Board of Management.
Rewards
Well done to all the Second Years who remained ‘booking free’ since the beginning of the school year. They were rewarded with a trip to the cinema on Friday last. Well done also to the students in Third Year Laurel for winning the reward trip to the cinema for being the best behaved class in Third Year. The competition for best behaved class in First Year was a extremely competitive affair cumulating in a three way tie so well done to U.C.C., U.C.D. and T.C.D. .Students in these classes were also rewarded with a trip to the cinema.
Child Protection
A new Child Protection Policy has been drafted and adopted by the Board of Management in keeping with the terms of Department of Education and Skills Circular 0065/2011. The Department’s Child Protection Procedures for Primary and Post Primary Schools have been adopted as part of this child protection policy. A hard copy of the policy is available to any parent by request or can be viewed on the school’s website www.wexfordcbs.ie . The person responsible for dealing with child protection concerns in the school is the Principal (DLP-Designated Liaison Person). In the principal’s absence, this responsibility lies with the Deputy Principal (DDLP-Deputy Designate Liaison Person).
First Year 2012
The Board of Management offered 96 places in First Year 2012-13. The closing date for acceptance of offer letters was Friday 2nd December 2011. The demand for places greatly outstripped 96 and hence there is a substantial waiting list. The school’s Admissions Policy has been reviewed and updated by the Board of Management and can be viewed on the school’s website (www.wexfordcbs.ie).
School Tours
The Transition Year tour to Iona College, New York, was a great success. We will be hosting our American friends in March in the New Year.
The First and Second Year Tour will be to the Delphi Adventure Centre in Galway from 22nd -24th February 2012.
Preparations are well underway for the TransitionYear Tour to China from 29th March- 6th April. Twenty students and three teachers will make the trip to Beijing for what should be a wonderful educational experience.
Third Years/Transition Years
All third year students and their parents are reminded to begin focusing their options for 2012-13. Important decisions have to be made re subject choice for Fifth Year or opting for T.Y. For those looking for more details re Admissions Policy/ T.Y., please consult the school’s Admissions Policy on the school website. Information Night on T.Y./Fifth Year will be held on Tuesday March 20th 2012.The current Transition Year students should also begin considering subject options for the next academic year.
Mock Exams
While the Department of Education and Skills waive Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate fees for medical card holders, the school will have to collect mock exam fees from all students to cover Mock Exams costs. The Leaving Certificate Mock Exams fee will be £100 this year and will be collected in early February 2012. The Junior Certificate Mock Exams fee will be £90 this year and will be collected in late January.
Footloose
Well done to all the students who took part in this year’s musical production ‘Footloose’. The show was a great success. I would particularly like to thank Ms. Spellman and Ms. Kavanagh for the countless hours of hard work they spent in organising and rehearsing for the show.
Christmas Newsletter Part 2
Christmas Fair
The Christmas Fair held on Friday 9th December was a tremendous success. I would like to thank Mrs Barry and Mrs Codd for all their hard work in making the project happen. The event helped to spark a great deal of entrepreneurial spirit among the students. I would also like to thank the parents who supported the event on the day which helped to make it such a success.
School Safety
I would like to remind all students to take great care while entering or exiting the school grounds or exiting the school into the school yard. Our site is limited in terms of parking facilities so it is important that we all are vigilant and aware of the risks of vehicular traffic. I would also like to remind parents dropping off students to park safely before allowing passengers to get out rather than stopping in traffic and allowing passengers out.
Subject Inspection
Inspections are carried out on an ongoing basis by the Department of Education and Skills in the country’s primary and secondary schools. Inspections usually take place on a whole school model or particular subject area(s) are chosen. We had a French Subject Inspection on the 13th-14th October The report was very positive about the standard of teaching and learning in the subject in the school and affirmed many of the good practices in evidence here. The full report will be available on the Department of Education and Skills website in due course.
Extra Supervised Study
Supervised study will be available for Leaving Certificate students during the February mid-term break in advance of the Mock Exams and during the Easter holidays. Supervised Study will be available for Junior Certificate students during the Easter holidays. Details in relation to cost/times/dates will be finalised in the New Year.
Congratulations!
I would like to congratulate Mrs Scallan and her husband on the birth of their twin sons, Luke and Alex. I would also like to extend best wishes to Ms. Paula Finn on the occasion of her marriage to Mr. Terry Ryan on December 31st.

Further tries by new players Lar Stout and Shaun Donaghue added to our tally. The conversion attempts were off target, but this will be fixed for the next outing against Bridgtown V.S. after Christmas.

Jessie Farrell , hidden from view, slides the ball past the keeper.
Liam Rockett beats the keeper to score stunning goal.
Wexford CBS under-14 footballers made it two wins out of two recently in their second game of the South Leinster Juvenile C championship against St. Kevin’s Dunlavin in the Volunteer’s GAA grounds at Pairc Charman.
The Boker Boys started the strongest and were two points up inside five minutes thanks to Adam Carroll and Dylan Dixon. From early on CBS started to dominate proceedings and centre-back Michael Lawlor was always a threat with his strong runs resulting in him kicking two points.
The home side enhanced their lead when Jesse Farrell scored the first goal of the game but Dunlavin responded with two points to leave the score at 1-4 to 0-2 after fifteen minutes. However, CBS re-exerted their authority for the remainder of the half. Midfielder Dylan Dixon was prolific with four points while Jesse Farrell completed his hat trick with two well taken goals which left the half-time score at 3-8 to 0-2.
Dunlavin opened the second half with a well taken point but CBS were determined to stay on the front foot and Eoin Doyle broke from half back to kick a great point.
Some exceptional point taking followed as Wexford CBS started to dictate the play. Shane McGrath notched up two fine scores, while the entire half forward line got in on the scoring with Liam Rockett adding to his goal, Stephen Kearney notching up two points while Conor Coleman chipped in with a great score.
In the final quarter of the game, Dunlavin responded with four goals but it was far too little too late. CBS captain Darragh Rossiter had the final say when he drove up the field to bury the ball in the Dunlavin net to bring the game to a close.
Best for Wexford CBS were Alan Browne, Eoin Doyle, Michael Lawlor, Darragh Rossiter, Dylan Dixon, Stephen Kearney, Liam Rockett and Jesse Farrell.
Wexford CBS: Nigel Donoghue (Glynn/Barntown); Aaron McGuire (Volunteers), Daniel Lynch (Sarsfields), Padraig Rossiter (St. Martin’s); Eoin Doyle (unattached 0-1), Michael Lawlor (Volunteers 0-2), Aaron Goodison (Volunteers); Darragh Rossiter (St. Martin’s 1-0), Dylan Dixon (Backwater 0-6); Liam Rockett (Shelmaliers 1-1), Stephen Kearney (Sarsfields 0-2), Conor Coleman (St. Martin’s 0-1); Jesse Farrell (Volunteers 3-1), Shane McGrath (Sarsfields 0-2), Adam Carroll (Sarsfields 0-1).

Baltinglass GAA Club, Friday 18 November 2011
Wexford CBS ..............................2-07
Scoil Chonglais Baltinglass.........1-08
From the throw-in CBS dominated possession and led by three points to one point thanks to the accuracy of Shane McGrath. Despite the early dominance of the Boker Boys, goalkeeper Nigel Donoghue had to be alert after fifteen minutes to pull off a great save as Baltinglass almost took advantage of some haphazard defending.
Nevertheless Wexford CBS remained positive and after twenty minutes Adam Carroll lobbed a high ball into the square that was misjudged by the Baltinglass rear-guard and ended up in the net.
The lead was extended to six points (1-4 to 0-1) with a great score by Liam Rockett after twenty five minutes. However Baltinglass dominated the end of the half and reduced their deficit with a goal and two points in the remaining five points to leave the bare minimum between the teams at half time.
Wexford CBS showed resolve and desire at the start of the second half which was best exemplified when Mikey Lawlor as he strode up the field to kick a fine point.
However, Baltinglass weren’t going to fade too easily on their home patch and they enjoyed a purple patch in which they kicked four points to lead by two (1-7 to 1-5).
When faced with defeat the CBS response was emphatic. In the 55th minute wing back Alan Browne escaped from his marker and lashed the ball to the top corner of the net.
With the shackles off, Wexford CBS got a firm grip of the game and Jesse Farrell and Darragh Rossiter got a point each in response to a Baltinglass point.
Best for CBS were Nigel Donoghue, Daniel Lynch, Mikey Lawlor, Padraig and Darragh Rossiter. Next up for the Wexford town school is home match against St. Kevin’s of Dunlavin.
Wexford CBS: Nigel Donoghue (Glynn Barntown); Kevin Harte (Shelmaliers), Padraig Rossiter (St Martin’s), Aaron Smyth (Volunteers); Alan Browne (Volunteers 1-0), Stephen Kearney (Sarsfields), Daniel Lynch (Sarsfields); Darragh Rossiter 0-1 (St. Martin’s), Michael Lawlor (Volunteers 0-1); Liam Rockett (Shelmaliers 0-1), Dylan Dixon (Blackwater), Aaron Goodison (Volunteers); Aaron McGuire (Volunteers), Shane McGrath (Sarsfields 0-3), Adam Carroll (Sarsfields 1-0).

U.17 Soccer
Wexford C.B.S....4 Bridgetown V.S...0
On Thursday 17th November the Wexford CBS under 17 side faced Bridgetown at home in a must win match in order to ensure qualification to the quarter finals as group winners. The side were under pressure to perform after a 1-1 draw away to Enniscorthy in their last group outing having found the home side incredibly difficult to break down and struggled to make their dominance pay off with goals. This pressure however resulted in a very determined performance against Bridgetown as the CBS boys began the game with real vigour and took the game to the away side straight from the off. The game was played in poor conditions with a strong wind blowing across the pitch affecting the play. It was the Wexford side however who coped better and dictated play by keeping the ball moving on the ground and creating chances. The excellent Robin Dempsey who was operating in a free role between attack and midfield came close to opening the scoring with a well taken effort which clipped the top of the cross bar from well outside the box. The CBS were enjoying the majority of possession and were well on top however Bridgetown created an opening with a through ball but keeper Jamie McDonnell bravely came off his line to block the Bridgetown effort taking the brunt of the onrushing player having cleared the ball. The CBS continued to dominate possession and finally took the lead after an excellent pass from John Bridges found Dale Scallan in space and the captain converted to put the CBS one goal ahead. The team created several more chances before the break but found Bridgetown hard to break down and on one break after good wing play from Darragh Rossiter Dylan Walsh and Robin Dempsey both eager to get on the score sheet collided with each other as the ball ran free.
The second half saw a continuation of the Wexford dominance as the home side continued to probe creating several chances, the front 6 in particular stringing together some lovely passes and dominating possession. The pressure paid off soon after the restart as an excellently worked team goal was finished off by Keith Morrissey, the side put together a number of passes before Dale Scallan hit a defence splitting pass which put Keith through and he lobbed the keeper with a brilliant finish. Darragh Rossiter the youngest member of the team came close to adding a third moments later but found his shot well blocked, Wexford CBS were clearly enjoying possession at this point and continued to create chances, captain Dale Scallan finished his 2nd and the teams 3rd soon after, with good work from Dylan Walsh down the right wing squaring the ball back across for Dale to apply a neat finish. The CBS made a number of changes as some of the subs got a chance to stake a claim for a starting place, the level of the performance did not drop however as the side continued to focus on attack. The excellent Robin Dempsey finally scored the goal his performance deserved in the closing stages after a good ball from Bobby Barnes found Marty Mullally in space and he found Robin in the box who finished well, the side now progress as group winners and will be confidence will be high heading into to their next game after such an impressive performance. Best on the day for the CBS were Dempsey, Scallan, Morrissey and John Bridges.
Wexford CBS: 1. Jamie McDonnell, 2. John Joe Browne, 3. Mark Hayes, 4. Evan Dunbar, 5. Jason Kearns, 6. John Bridges, 7. Dylan Walsh, 8. Dale Scallan, 9. Robin Dempsey, 10. Keith Morrissey, 11. Darragh Rossiter, Subs: 12. Cian Doyle, 13. Richie Kearney, 14. Conor Clancy, 15. Marty Mullally, 16. Bobby Barnes
U.15 Soccer
Wexford CBS 1-1 Enniscorthy CBS
Our U-15 Soccer Team head to Wexford Celtic to play Enniscorthy CBS in our second group game. After torrential rain the under-foot conditions will be very tricky.
Wexford CBS start well, passing is difficult however, as puddles of rainwater restrict any attempted good play. It’s a long ball game. Eoin Doyle and Emmet Sinnott keep it tight at the back. Luke Redmond-Browne starts to spray ball to the wings. At times the waterlogged surface makes for comical tackling, splashing water and mud everywhere. Alex Bergin breaks up an Enniscorthy attack as they push forward looking for the opening goal. Darragh Rossiter and Dylan Ennis try some neat passing but the ball gets stuck in surface water. Luke plays a long ball behind Enniscorthy’s back-four, Mikey Lawlor is on to it like a flash. The goalkeeper comes out narrowing the angle; Mikey calmly fires the ball to the back of the net.
Wexford CBS 1-0 Enniscorthy CBS
The game almost deteriorates to a water splashing contest, passing continues to be difficult as numerous passes get stuck in midfield puddles. Enniscorthy start to put pressure on Wexford’s goal. A great shot from distance has Wexford goalkeeper Shane McGrath back peddling, he makes a great save and gathers the ball in front of the on-rushing attacker.
Half-Time
Wexford CBS sub: Joe Redmond for Dylan Ennis
Kick-Off
Eoin McDonald is playing very well, tackles fly in, another splash! Enniscorthy now playing with a strong breeze, pump the ball forward. Wexford CBS continue to repel the threat.
Wexford sub: Dylan Dixon for Emmett Ryan.
Pressure is mounting on Wexford’s backline. A corner to Enniscorthy, great defending by Wexford sends the ball for another corner. The ball is swung across and a towering header sends the ball past Wexford’s keeper. 1-1
Aaron Goodison clears the ball, Wexford are now pushing forward in search of the winning goal. Neat play sets up a Wexford corner. The ball is swung across; a scramble in the box has an unlucky Emmet Sinnott berating the terrible under foot conditions after an attempted strike.
Wexford sub: Alex Lohier for Darragh Rossiter
Wexford continue to push forward. Enniscorthy defend well and repel attack after attack.
Wexford fire the ball up the wing, Dylan Dixon squares it to middle, Eoin Doyle shoots, the goal keeper dives but he hasn’t a chance. Its going in, No its not! The ball stops dead in a puddle just before the goal line, the keeper finds his footing and smothers ball.
Wexford sub: Brendan Furlong for Mikey Lawlor
Both teams continue to trudge through the muddy field. One last corner for Wexford, but it is defended well by Enniscorthy.
Full-Time
Wexford CBS 1-1 Enniscorthy CBS
A fair result, great credit to both teams standard of play on a truly water soaked playing field.
Wexford CBS Team:
GK Shane McGrath, Aaron Goodison, Emmet Sinnott(Capt.), Eoin Doyle, Alex Bergin, Emmett Ryan, Darragh Rossiter, Luke Redmond-Browne, Dylan Ennis, Eoin McDonald, Mikey Lawlor.

Leinster Senior Rugby Development Cup Quarter Final
Colaiste Cill Mhaintain...14
Wexford C.B.S.................11
All bar three players are still eligible for next year so this was a young team, up against older and physically bigger players. However the heart and determination of the Bokerboys is well known. Wexford went 3-0 up from a Colm O'Corcora penalty. At this stage of the first half Wexford were playing the better rugby and were dominating the scrums. This possession led to a strong carry by Michael McGuire who passed to Ciaran Kavanagh, who in turn drew in the final defender and popped a pass to winger Peter Furlong to score in the corner. 8-0.
Slowly Wicklow came into the game and converted a penalty before half time to reduce the arrears to 5 points. Wexford again conceded early in the second half making it 8-6 and were now finding it difficult to get into the opposing half. Following a quick tap penalty Wicklow were on the scoreboard again , this time with a try to put them into the lead 11-8. Once again Wexford responded and following good work by Ian Moran on the wing Wexford received a penalty which Eoin Roche struck magnificently between the posts from 35 meters. 11-11.
With time running out however Wexford conceded a penalty and the final kick hit the upright and barely droped over the bar, enough to count and Wexford were out.
Best for Wexford on the day were Gavin Byrne, Collie Joyce-Ahearne and John Joe Browne who tackled all day. The front 5 were powerful at scrum time while the backs did well with the ball they got.
Team: James Byrne, Steve Roche, James Roche, Michael Maguire, Darragh Comiskey, Gavin Byrne, Collie Joyce-Ahearne, Ciaran Kavanagh (Capt.), John Joe Browne, Ian Moran, Eoin Roche, Dylan Lalor, Colm O'Corcora, Peter Furlong, Gavin O'Connor.
