Wexford C.B.S....4 Bridgetown V.S...0

On Thursday 17th November the Wexford CBS under 17 side faced Bridgetown at home in a must win match in order to ensure qualification to the quarter finals as group winners. The side were under pressure to perform after a 1-1 draw away to Enniscorthy in their last group outing having found the home side incredibly difficult to break down and struggled to make their dominance pay off with goals. This pressure however resulted in a very determined performance against Bridgetown as the CBS boys began the game with real vigour and took the game to the away side straight from the off. The game was played in poor conditions with a strong wind blowing across the pitch affecting the play. It was the Wexford side however who coped better and dictated play by keeping the ball moving on the ground and creating chances. The excellent Robin Dempsey who was operating in a free role between attack and midfield came close to opening the scoring with a well taken effort which clipped the top of the cross bar from well outside the box. The CBS were enjoying the majority of possession and were well on top however Bridgetown created an opening with a through ball but keeper Jamie McDonnell bravely came off his line to block the Bridgetown effort taking the brunt of the onrushing player having cleared the ball. The CBS continued to dominate possession and finally took the lead after an excellent pass from John Bridges found Dale Scallan in space and the captain converted to put the CBS one goal ahead. The team created several more chances before the break but found Bridgetown hard to break down and on one break after good wing play from Darragh Rossiter Dylan Walsh and Robin Dempsey both eager to get on the score sheet collided with each other as the ball ran free.
The second half saw a continuation of the Wexford dominance as the home side continued to probe creating several chances, the front 6 in particular stringing together some lovely passes and dominating possession. The pressure paid off soon after the restart as an excellently worked team goal was finished off by Keith Morrissey, the side put together a number of passes before Dale Scallan hit a defence splitting pass which put Keith through and he lobbed the keeper with a brilliant finish. Darragh Rossiter the youngest member of the team came close to adding a third moments later but found his shot well blocked, Wexford CBS were clearly enjoying possession at this point and continued to create chances, captain Dale Scallan finished his 2nd and the teams 3rd soon after, with good work from Dylan Walsh down the right wing squaring the ball back across for Dale to apply a neat finish. The CBS made a number of changes as some of the subs got a chance to stake a claim for a starting place, the level of the performance did not drop however as the side continued to focus on attack. The excellent Robin Dempsey finally scored the goal his performance deserved in the closing stages after a good ball from Bobby Barnes found Marty Mullally in space and he found Robin in the box who finished well, the side now progress as group winners and will be confidence will be high heading into to their next game after such an impressive performance. Best on the day for the CBS were Dempsey, Scallan, Morrissey and John Bridges.
