South Leinster Juvenile Hurling B Championship

Wednesday March 7th, 2012
Wexford CBS v FCJ Bunclody
At HWH Bunclody’s GAA grounds

Wexford CBS...............4-8     FCJ Bunclody.........3-7

Wexford CBS’s juvenile hurlers got their championship campaign back on track recently in Bunclody with a narrow but well deserved victory over FCJ Bunclody on Wednesday. CBS built up a 2-6 to 1-1 lead at half-time having had the benefit of the strong wind but they had to withstand a fierce comeback from the home side to head home with the points.
CBS lost their opening game against Gorey Community School and needed a win here to stay in the championship.
CBS were rocked by the concession of an early goal but they responded well and Stephen Kearney helped the Boker boys to get into the game with two points in the 6th and 9th minutes before he went on a fine solo run in the 13th minute and slammed the ball to the net.
Dylan Dixon gave Kearney a neat pass and the later pointed, before Kearney converted a free to leave CBS in front by 1-4 to 1-0. Kearney very nearly had another goal but his shot hit the post.
Stephen Rossiter fired over a point and then CBS got a great boost just before half-time when Conor Coleman blasted the ball to the net to leave the interval score at 2-6 to 1-1.
CBS enjoyed a tremendous start to the second half when Aaron McGuire put Dylan Dixon behind the FCJ defence with a clever pass and the midfielder sent the ball to the net. CBS very nearly got their fourth goal minutes later when Darragh Rossiter fed Stephen Kearney but his shot was brilliantly saved by the keeper.
This sparked FCJ into life and they gradually began to whittle down the CBS lead to three points by the 50th minute but Conor Coleman registered his second goal at a crucial time for the CBS to give his side a six point cushion again.
CBS were thankful to keeper Shane McGrath who made an outstanding save in the 54th minute and this seemed to inspire the defence who, led by Daniel Lynch, kept out wave after wave of FCJ Bunclody attacks.

Wexford CBS:
Shane McGrath (Faythe Harriers); Cormac Byrne (Faythe Harriers), Daniel Lynch (Faythe Harriers), Kevin Harte (Shelmaliers); Padraig Rossiter (St. Martin’s), Darragh Rossiter (St. Martin’s), Eoin Doyle (Faythe Harriers); Dylan Dixon (Blackwater 1-0), Liam Rockett (Shelmaliers); Stephen Rossiter (Shelmaliers 0-1), Stephen Kearney (Faythe Harriers 1-6 4 frees), Kevin Corrigan (Blackwater); Aaron McGuire (Volunteers), Peter Ryan (Faythe Harriers), Conor Coleman (2-0).

U.16 Soccer Draw

Wexford C.B.S....1 New Ross C.B.S....1

Wexford CBS left New Ross with mixed emotions on Friday 2nd March after a hard fought encounter with New Ross CBS. A late equaliser from Jessie Farrell salvaged a point for the boker boys but they will feel they could have gotten more from the game which they dominated for large spells.
Wexford missing captain Robin Dempsey, began brightly on the New Ross Celtic pitch but failed to turn any early pressure into goals as New Ross looked to close down and frustrate their opponents. Wexford created a number of chances early on with Mark Doyle and Luke Byrne both working well on the wings and creating chances for the away side, the strike force were unable however to convert as they found an excellent New Ross goalkeeper in defiant form. Wexford were struggling to find their feet as New Ross wouldn’t allow them to play their regular game and looked dangerous on the break.
Luke Byrne struck the post with a well placed shot but the game soon turned on its head. A long ball from the New Ross keeper wasn’t properly cleared at the back and New Ross took the lead with a stunning strike from 30 yards out to lead at the break. Wexford CBS made some changes and began the second half in determined fashion and completely dominated the game while going in search of an equaliser, the boker boys put the New Ross defence and keeper under enormous pressure but were thwarted by a magnificent performance from the New Ross keeper who was in no mood to be beaten. CBS changed formation to a 3-4-3 with Richie Kearney moving up front and the continued pressure was beginning to tell on a tiring New Ross team. The Wexford side finally managed to find the back of the New Ross net with Jessie Farrell neatly finishing after good work from Eoin MacDonald and Mark Doyle created the opening. Neither side managed to really test the opposition goal before the final whistle, but Wexford CBS were relieved to salvage what could prove to be an important point but they could have gotten so much more.
Best on the day for CBS were Richie Kearney, Mark Doyle, Cian Doyle and Jessie Farrell.
Wexford CBS: Joe Coleman, Eoghan Whitty, Lar Stoutt, Richie Kearney, Emmett Sinnott, Luke Byrne, Sean Donohue, Eoin MacDonald, Mark Doyle, Darragh Rossiter, George Cullen; Subs: Jessie Farrell for Cullen, Cian Doyle for Byrne, Alex Bergin for Donohue

U.16 Soccer Win

Wexford C.B.S....4  Colaiste Atha, Kilmuckridge...1

Wexford CBS began their Under 16 season in the Wicklow Wexford league with a comprehensive victory over Kilmuckridge in the school pitch on Wednesday 29th of February.
Wexford began brightly and took the lead inside the first minute when Mark Doyle turned an excellent long ball in from Alex Bergin into the Kilmuckridge net. Wexford took the early initiative and dominated possession of the ball as a defensive Kilmuckridge attempted to close down CBS at every opportunity. CBS began to dominate possession and attempted to increase their lead, the side were pushing forward and left themselves open at the back and Kilmuckridge almost capitalised but found debutant keeper Joe Coleman in defiant form as he made a couple of smart saves. The increased CBS pressure lead to a Sean Donohue cross being turned into the net by a Kilmuckridge defender just before half time to put Wexford 2-0 up.
The second half saw many changes to the Wexford line-up and a much improved performance as the boker boys completely dominated their opponents and were firing in shots on the Kilmuckridge goal. Ian Moran increased the Wexford lead early in the second half as he scrambled the ball into the net after Kilmuckridge struggled to clear their lines. Team captain Robin Dempsey increased the lead to 4-0 with a spectacular strike on the volley into the top corner of the goal, much to the delight of the onlooking crowd, to cap a memorable performance. Kilmuckridge managed to salvage a consolation goal in the dying moments as Joe Coleman parried into the net. It was a comprehensive performance from Wexford and a great start to the campaign, best on the day for CBS were Robin Dempsey, Lar Stoutt, Mark Doyle and Sean Donohue.
Wexford: Joe Coleman, Alex Bergin, Lar Stoutt, Eoghan Whitty, Emmet Sinnott, Robin Dempsey, Sean Donohue, Darragh Rossiter, Richie Kearney, Cian Doyle, Mark Doyle, Subs: Ian Moran, Eoin Doyle, Stephen Healy, Andrew McGuickan, Aidan Murphy, Luke Byrne, George Cullen, Eoin MacDonald,

South Leinster Juvenile ‘B’ Hurling championship: Tuesday February 28th, 2012

Gorey Community School...........2-12
Wexford C.B.S............................1-11

Wexford C.B.S. put in a brave performance in this South Leinster Juvenile ‘B’ Hurling Championship clash in Parc Charman on Tuesday before Gorey Community School ran out winners by four points.
The opening exchanges were even until Gorey’s excellent centre-forward Conor Levingstone scored two brilliant points to get his side off the mark.  CBS responded with brace of points from their centre-forward Stephen ‘Turk’ Kearney to tie up the score.
That was how the game remained until the 19th minute when disaster struck for CBS when Levingstone went on a mazy run but his shot on goal was hooked and the breaking ball fell to the Gorey full-forward who buried the ball in the net.
There was more trouble in the 26th minute when a Gorey forward got inside the defence and gave Shane McGrath no chance in the CBS goal. The Bokerboys were creating plenty of chances but they hit twelve first half wides which did a lot of harm. Stephen Kearney tapped over a free before the break to leave his sides trailing by nine points (2-6 to 0-3).
Two quick points from Turk were answered by Gorey with two points of their own but CBS got a run on their opponents in the third quarter as they sharpened up their shooting and began to cut out the silly mistakes.
Turk placed Kevin Corrigan for a nice point before Stephen Rossiter found Kevin Birney and he flashed the ball over the bar (2-8 to 0-7). It was obvious CBS needed a goal but Gorey’s defence held firm.
Gorey surged further ahead with two points but CBS answered with points from Turk Kearney (two), Stephen Rossiter (free) and Liam Rockett to leave the score at 2-12 to 0-11.
The goal CBS needed arrived in the 55th minute courtesy of a blistering 21 yard free from Turk but at the other end CBS keeper Shane McGrath had to be alert to keep out a shot from Conor Levingstone.
Try as they might, CBS couldn’t close the gap any further and the Gorey lads ran out four point winners.
Wexford C.B.S.: Shane McGrath (Faythe Harriers); Kevin Harte (Shelmaliers), Daniel Lynch (Faythe Harriers), Cormac Byrne (Faythe Harriers); Eoin Doyle (Faythe Harriers), Darragh Rossiter (St. Martin’s), Padraig Rossiter (St. Martin’s); Stephen Rossiter (Shelmaliers 0-1 free), Liam Hore (Faythe Harriers); Kevin Corrigan (Blackwater 0-1), Stephen Kearney (Faythe Harriers 1-7, 1-3 frees), Kevin Birney (Glynn-Barntown 0-1); Lee Busher (Volunteers), Liam Rockett (Shelmaliers 0-1), Adam Carroll (Faythe Harriers).

South Leinster Juvenile C Football Final

Ardscoil Rath Iomaghain............ 4-14
Wexford CBS.............................. 5-1

ANY HOPES that Wexford CBS would complete a notable hat-trick of South Leinster juvenile football titles for County Wexford were quickly dashed in Eire Og’s pitch in Carlow last Tuesday as Ardscoil Rath Iomaghain (Kildare) dealt clinically with the Wexford town school.
so far this year Good Counsel (New Ross) have won the ‘A’ title while Enniscorthy CBS claimed the ‘B’ title and a victory for the Bokerboys in this ‘C’ final would have been a fine achievement for the county.
However, at half-time the Rathangan lads had an unassailable lead of 4-11 to 0-0 after playing with the strong wind but don’t be fooled by the wind factor – the Kildare lads were sharper and played some lovely football in that opening half to leave the CBS team stunned.
The tables were turned somewhat in the second half as CBS set about restoring some pride and they dominated the play and scoring but the mountain was far too steep to climb.
The opening exchanges were promising for Wexford CBS and the game was scoreless for the first five minutes but after that the Kildare boys completely took over.
They had some very exciting forwards especially wing-forward Jimmy Hyland who tortured the CBS defence with his mazy incisive runs. It was 2-4 to 0-0 after fifteen minutes and the agony continued as Ardscoil’s forwards enjoyed copious amounts of possession to constantly add to their ever-increasing first half score.
The Wexford CBS team was re-jigged a number of times in an effort to stem the onslaught but nothing worked for them. Losing centre-back Mikey Lawlor to injury in the week before the game didn’t help their cause either.
The referee’s half-time whistle was very welcome to the CBS players who made a valiant effort to regroup.
A good start to the second half was vital for CBS’s wind-assisted comeback and they got it when Darragh Rossiter and Conor Coleman were involved in a move which resulted in Shane McGrath blasting the ball to the net.
Minutes later McGrath converted a free and Stephen Kearney made the CBS score 2-1 in the 41st minute when he found the net with a stinging shot. Team captain Darragh Rossiter went close with a low shot which was inches away from the net but CBS’s third goal arrived in the 45th minute when Dylan Dixon pounced on a sloppy clearance from Ardscoil ‘keeper Conor Mulligan and lobbed the ball over his head and into the net.
CBS maintained their charge even though time was running out and they managed to keep the Kildare side scoreless in the second half until the final few minutes when Jimmy Hyland (2) and Paul Maloney scored points on counter-attacks.
CBS grabbed a fourth goal when Darragh Rossiter passed to Shane McGrath who calmly slotted away his second goal and in the 56th minute a nice move involving Stephen Kearney and Garry Cullen resulted in Adam Carroll palming the ball to the net.
It was a disastrous day for Wexford CBS but they fought like tigers in the second half to go home with some degree of pride and their best displays came from Daniel Lynch, Eoin Doyle, Darragh Rossiter, Stephen Kearney and Shane McGrath.
Ardscoil Rath Iomaghain: Conor Mulligan; Conor Jameson, Austin Bolger Hynes, Stephen Geoghan; Daryl Dunne, Cian O’Neill, Shane Maughan; Eoin Synott, Ciaran Maher; Jimmy Hyland (0-7, 4 frees), Paul Maloney (0-2), Joe Breen (2-0); Darragh Malone (1-1), Shane O’Brien (0-3), Aaron Teehan (1-1).

Juvenile Hurling News - Challenge Match: Friday Feb 3, 2012

Wexford CBS...................2-7  St. Peter’s College...........4-2
A couple of late goals denied the juvenile hurlers a victory in this well contested practise match at a bitter cold Power Park. However it was an excellent work out in preparation for the South Leinster B Championship and the Rice Cup in March.
CBS started very well with Conor Coleman somehow squeezing the ball between the posts from a very tight angle. St. Peter’s responded with 1-1 before Stephen Kearney pointed to leave the score at 1-1 to 0-2.
To prove that his first point wasn’t a fluke Conor Coleman squeezed another one over after 15 minutes but CBS were rocked with the concession of another goal shortly afterwards.
CBS dominated the rest of the half with Dylan Dixon converting a free and then came the score of the game when Liam Rockett and Conor Coleman combined to set up Stephen Kearney for a sweet point. Stephen Kearney then set up Conor Coleman for his third point to leave the score at 2-2 to 0-6 at the break.
St. Peter’s dominated the start of the second half and grabbed their third goal to build up a four point lead but Lee Busher pounced for the first of his two goals following a period of pressure after a good attacking run from Conor Coleman.
Minutes later Dylan Dixon went on a searing run but his stinging shot was parried by the keeper and Busher was quickest to react again and batted the ball over the line. St. Peter’s grabbed their fourth goal in the 56th minute and the final score of the game arrived when Darragh Rossiter surged upfield and passed to Stephen Rossiter who fired a long range point.

Wexford CBS:
Shane McGrath; Kevin Harte, Daniel Lynch, Cormac Byrne; Eoin Doyle, Darragh Rossiter, Padraig Rossiter; Dylan Dixon (0-1 free), Kevin Birney; Liam Rocket, Stephen Rossiter (0-1), Gary Cullen; Conor Coleman (0-3), Stephen Kearney (0-2), Kevin Corrigan.
